Originally, there were 19 monasteries in the area, but only a few remain today. During the Soviet era, the site was used as a military training ground, with caves serving as shooting targets. Eventually, the site was restored, and monastic life was revived.

Wonderful David Gareji monastery experience - Guram was our delightful tour guide for this trip that we booked via Viator. He shared many wonderful insights into his culture, country and had an amazing knowledge about the history of the monastery. His driving was careful and skillful. My parents are in their 80's and he was most thoughtful and considerate of their needs, and in general was very kind and full of exuberance. Thank you Gurum for making the trip even more memorable and special!
