Akhtala Monastery - The Akhtala area dates back to ancient times, with origins in the 8th century BC. Historically known as Agaraki in the 5th century, the name Akhtala is believed to be of Turkish origin, meaning “white gate.” Phhindzahank translates to “copper mine.” The partially ruined Akhtala fortress was constructed on Bronze and Iron Age foundations by the Kyurikids at the end of the 10th century.
