Many tours focus solely on churches, but this one offers a comprehensive experience. This journey combines the ancient frescoes of Akhtala with the gritty, industrial history of the Soviet era.
The itinerary includes a visit to Akhtala Fortress, known for its rare murals, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Haghpat and Sanahin. Additionally, it explores the recent history of Alaverdi, a copper mining town reminiscent of a movie set. Visitors will witness the vast, abandoned Soviet factory and cable cars set against the lush canyon walls, offering a unique view not typically seen on standard postcards.
For lunch, the tour avoids tourist restaurants. Instead, guests are welcomed by the family who maintains the Haghpat complex. Dining in their home, the caretaker’s wife prepares a delightful array of authentic, homemade Armenian dishes (BBQ, salads, dolma) exclusively for the small group.
