Overview of Borjomi:
Borjomi is renowned for its mineral water industry, which stands as Georgia’s top export. Archaeological findings have uncovered stone baths in the region, indicating that these mineral waters have been used by people for millennia. Due to the believed restorative and healing properties of the area’s mineral springs, it is a popular destination for those with health concerns. Borjomi also boasts the largest ecologically-themed amusement park in the Caucasus, with the “Mineral Water Park” being a prime spot to visit. The Borjomi-Kharagauli protected area ranks among the largest national parks in Europe.
- Rabati Castle - Next, the journey continues to Rabati Castle.
Overview of Rabati Castle:
Constructed in the 13th century, Rabati Castle evolved under the influence of various cultures over the centuries, which is evident in its architectural style. The 7-hectare castle complex includes a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret, and a Synagogue. During the 13th-16th centuries, the castle and the town of Akhaltsikhe served as the residence of the Jakhely princes. A restored Rabati Castle was unveiled in Akhaltsikhe in August 2012, with architects and engineers reviving old, nearly ruined buildings using archival materials and images.
- Vardzia - Following this, the tour proceeds to the ancient city of Vardzia (Cave city).
Overview of Vardzia:
The subterranean halls of the “mountain queen,” carved from solid rock, make Vardzia resemble a scene from the pages of Lord of the Rings. In truth, it is a cave-palace-monastery constructed not by dwarfs, but by Georgians in the Caucasus for the legendary King Tamar during the Golden Ages (12th century).
