During the 13th-16th centuries, the castle and the town of Akhaltsikhe served as the residence of the Jakhely princes. A restored Rabati Castle was unveiled in Akhaltsikhe in August 2012, with architects and engineers reviving old, nearly ruined buildings using archival materials and images.
