- Ujarma Fortress - The Ujarma fortress was divided into two sections: the Upper Fortress (the Citadel) and the Lower City. A royal palace, featuring a two-storey structure, was situated in the eastern part of the Citadel. The Upper Fortress faced destruction in the 10th century by the Arabian conqueror Abul Kassim but was restored in the 12th century by King George III, who utilized it as a treasury. According to Georgian chronicler Leonti Mroweli, the foundation of the Ujarma fortress was laid by the Georgian-Iberian king Aspagur in the III-IV centuries. During King Vakhtang Gorgasali’s reign, the fortress was expanded and served as a residence. Ujarma was captured in 914 when the Arabs invaded the Caucasus mountains, previously under Persian control. The battle caused significant damage to the structure. The upper fortress was destroyed in the 10th century by the Arab conqueror Abul Kassim, but was restored in the 12th century by King George III.
- Shuamta Monasteries - There are two monasteries: Old Shuamta and New Shuamta. Old Shuamta is a Georgian Orthodox monastery located on a forested mountain approximately 1015 m above sea level. “Shuamta” means “between the mountains,” aptly describing its secluded and scenic location amidst the deciduous forests of Gombori. The monastic complex includes a 5th-century basilica and two domed churches from the 7th century. The largest dome-shaped church resembles the Jvari monastery in style and architecture. All the monastery’s churches are constructed from carved stone. It was abandoned in the 16th century. The wife of King Lewan II established a new monastery named New Shuamta. The main church of the new monastery was built with brick, and its walls are adorned with frescoes. The monastery buildings were renovated by Erekle II. In 2008, the Old Shuamta monastery was restored.
- Alaverdi St. George Cathedral - Alaverdi Monastery is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox monastery. While parts of the monastery date back to the 6th century, the current cathedral was constructed in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an older church of St. George. The monastery was founded by one of the 13 Assyrian monks, Joseph Alaverdeli, who traveled from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi, a former pagan religious center dedicated to the Moon.
- Ikalto Monastery Complex - Ikalto Monastery is renowned for its monastery complex and academy. The monastery was established by Saint Zenon, one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers, in the late 6th century. It became one of Georgia’s most important cultural and educational centers. An academy was founded during the reign of King David the Builder by Arsen Ikaltoeli in the early 12th century.
- Tsinandali Palace - Tsinandali Estate - Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, a pioneer of Georgian romanticism, transformed the estate in the village of Tsinandali into a cultural and intellectual hub of the country. The complex includes a memorial house, a landscape garden, a historical winery, wine cellar, hotel, and café. The landscape garden in Tsinandali is the first European-style recreational area in Georgia, designed by European landscape architects. The garden is unique for its exotic plants and features “the love lane.” Legend has it that if lovers walk through it with their eyes closed, they will enjoy a happy life together. Nino Chavchavadze and Alexander Griboedov first met in this garden. The first wine in Georgia was bottled at the Tsinandali winery. Chavchavadze’s collection of vintage wines includes over 15,000 bottles, with the oldest dating back to 1814.
- Telavi History Museum - Palace and Museum of King Erekle II - Established in 1927, the museum complex includes the Royal Palace of kings, churches, remnants of philosophical and theological schools founded by Erekle, King’s Bath, tunnel, and unique gates on the East and West sides. The museum houses numismatic materials, an early medieval sarcophagus, late medieval armor, collections of 17th-19th century copper household items, weapons, Khevsureti clothing, rich collections of rugs, manuscripts, books printed in King Erekle’s press, paintings, and small plastic samples, as well as works by Georgian painters. The church of the palace, the east door, and the bath were constructed during Archil’s period in the second half of the 18th century. King Erekle built a five-meter wall in 1753. King Erekle’s church, built in 1758, also served a defensive purpose.
