Please note that the duration includes travel time from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon, as well as travel between various stops within the park.
Wachirathan Falls - Visit the magnificent Wachirathan Waterfall, a highlight of Doi Inthanon National Park and the most impressive waterfall in the Chiang Mai region.
Plunging from a significant height, the waterfall creates a fine mist that envelops the area, giving it a dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The emerald waters swirl around moss-covered rocks, enhancing the natural beauty and tranquility of the scene. On sunny days, a vibrant rainbow often forms in the mist, creating a perfect photo opportunity and a magical sight that delights every visitor.
The powerful roar of the cascading water, the lush greenery, and the crisp mountain air make Wachirathan Waterfall a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Twin Royal Stupas (Phra Maha Dhatu Nabha Metaneedol and Nabhapol Bhumisiri - Visit the King and Queen Chedis, two stunning pagodas built to honor the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit of Thailand. The King’s Chedi, known as Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon, was completed in 1987 to celebrate the King’s 60th birthday, while the Queen’s Chedi, Naphaphonphumisiri, was finished in 1992 to mark the Queen’s 60th birthday. These elegant, mirrored structures are designed in traditional Thai style but with modern architectural touches, and their gleaming surfaces reflect the sunlight beautifully, making them even more spectacular.
The chedis are surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens bursting with colorful flowers and fragrant plants. The location offers breathtaking panoramic views over the misty valleys and rolling hills of Chiang Mai province.
A visit to these iconic landmarks is not only a feast for the eyes but also a glimpse into Thailand’s royal heritage and devotion.
Nature Trails Ang Ka - Take a short and easy nature walk along the Ang Ka Nature Trail, a wooden platform path suitable for everyone, and discover the unique flora and forest that thrive at this high altitude in Doi Inthanon National Park. Mae Hong Son - Pai
Huay Pu Keng Karenni Village - After an early breakfast, the journey of discovery continues through this beautiful part of the country. First, drive to a pier, where a longtail boat is boarded to the Kayan (long-neck) village of Huay Pa Kaeng, better known as Baan Nam Piang Din, located right on the border of Thailand and Burma.
The Kayan people, a displaced ethnic minority, fled conflict and persecution in neighboring Myanmar. The women are often referred to as “long-necks” because they wear brass rings around their necks, creating the appearance of an elongated neck.
After visiting the Kayan village, return by boat to Mae Hong Son.
Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu - Visit Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, a Burmese-style temple founded in 1860. The top of Doi Kong Mu Hill offers a 360-degree view of Chong Kham Lake, Mae Hong Son, the Pai Valley, and the airport on one side, and the forested hills of Burma on the other.
Wat Chong Kham - If time permits, make a short stop at Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang, two picturesque temples located side by side on the edge of the scenic Jong Kham Lake in Mae Hong Son.
These temples are known for their graceful Burmese-style architecture, whitewashed chedis, and golden tiered roofs that reflect beautifully in the water.
Wat Jong Kham is the older of the two, originally built nearly 200 years ago, while Wat Jong Klang is renowned for its intricate wood carvings and rare Burmese glass paintings depicting scenes from the Jataka tales. Together they create a serene and photogenic setting, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light casts a magical glow over the lake.
Tham Lod Cave - The final stop today is at the Lod Caves, one of the most spectacular cave systems in Asia. Entering the cave feels like stepping into a fairytale, with dramatic limestone formations, ancient wall paintings, towering pillars, and a river flowing right through its chambers. The caves are also home to fascinating archaeological remains of the mysterious “Log Coffin” culture, dating back 1,500 to 3,000 years. Among the most remarkable discoveries are the wooden coffins, carved from entire teak logs and placed high within the limestone cliffs, leaving visitors to wonder about the people who created them.
During the visit, take a bamboo raft ride along the underground river, adding to the magical and adventurous atmosphere of the cave. After exploring this extraordinary site, the journey continues to Pai, a charming mountain village known for its laid-back vibe, scenic beauty, and welcoming atmosphere, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
Pai - Chiang Mai
Santichon Village - After breakfast, check out and continue the journey, with a few more stops before returning to Chiang Mai.
The first visit of the day is to Santichon Village, a unique settlement founded by Yunnan Chinese who migrated from China and preserved their culture, traditions, and way of life. Walking through the village feels like stepping into another world, with its houses, tea shops, and pavilions reflecting the charming Yunnan style. Decorative details, Chinese gates, and peaceful surroundings offer a glimpse into a community that has held onto its roots while blending with Northern Thailand.
Santichon is also known for its tea culture and authentic Yunnan cuisine. Visitors can sample specialties like Yunnan noodles or sip freshly brewed tea prepared in the traditional way. Beyond the food, the village offers insight into local customs, crafts, and daily life, making it a culturally rich stop on the journey.
Wat Phra That Mae Yen - Afterward, continue to the iconic Big Buddha at Wat Phra That Mae Yen, one of Pai’s most recognizable landmarks.
This gleaming white Buddha statue sits high on a hilltop and can be seen from miles away, watching serenely over the valley. The sight is impressive from a distance, but even more breathtaking up close. To reach the statue, climb 353 steps, a short but rewarding ascent that leads to a panoramic viewpoint.
From the top, enjoy sweeping vistas over Pai, its lush green valleys, and the surrounding mountains, a truly memorable highlight of the journey.
Pai Memorial Bridge - Make a short stop at the Memorial Bridge, a historic landmark that dates back to the Second World War.
The bridge was originally constructed by the Japanese army as part of their supply route to transport weapons and goods to Myanmar (then Burma).
After the war, the retreating forces set the bridge on fire, leaving it in ruins. For the local community, however, the bridge had become an essential connection in daily life, so it was carefully rebuilt and restored.
Today, it stands not only as a practical river crossing but also as a reminder of the resilience of the local people and the turbulent history of the region.
Pai Canyon - Continue to Pai Canyon, one of the area’s most striking natural wonders. Picture reddish sandy cliffs, rugged rock formations plunging 30 meters deep, narrow trails balancing along ridges, and a lush green valley stretching out below: nature at its most dramatic.
From the main viewpoint, venture further into the canyon along a narrow ridge that leads deeper inside.
The winding paths of Pai Canyon follow the mountain crests and reward you with breathtaking panoramic views over villages, farmland, and the mountain ranges in the distance. However, there are no railings, and in some places, the crossings can be quite risky. If you suffer from vertigo, if it has just rained, or if you are wearing flip-flops, it’s wise to think twice before heading further. Safety always comes first, so make sure to wear proper shoes and use common sense when exploring.
Mork Fa Waterfall - Finally, make the way back to Chiang Mai along one of the most scenic routes in Thailand. This winding mountain road boasts an incredible 762 bends, including many hairpin turns, with breathtaking views of lush valleys and misty peaks at every turn.
Along the way, pause at Mok Fa Waterfall, nestled deep within the vibrant greenery of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. This impressive 60-meter cascade tumbles into a natural pool, inviting you to cool off and soak in the refreshing surroundings. Surrounded by tropical forest, the sound of birdsong, and the soothing rush of water, Mok Fa Waterfall is the perfect spot to take a moment to relax and reconnect with nature.
Late afternoon, arrive in Chiang Mai and be dropped off at your hotel, where you will say farewell to your driver and guide.
The experiences and memories collected on this trip are sure to leave a lasting impression, reminding you of the breathtaking beauty and cultural heritage of Northern Thailand.
