- Alistrati - Begin your journey from Thessaloniki and head to the Alistrati region. Your first destination is the Alistrati Cave.
- Aggitis - Explore the Aggitis Canyon Gorge, where the river has carved a stunning 15 km gorge between Mounts Menikio and Falakro. The area is known for its vertical cliffs reaching up to 80 m, lush riverside vegetation including willows, poplars, and laurels, and abundant wildlife such as raptors and migratory birds.
This location is a favored spot for rafting and kayaking, offering routes suitable for both novices and experienced paddlers, all set within the gorge’s impressive rock walls.
Trails like the 5.5 km Alistrati–Symvoli Dam hike provide a picturesque walk along the river, through forests, and over bridges, leading to the nearby Alistrati Cave.
- Cave of Alistrati - Prepare to be astonished! Alistrati Cave is one of Europe’s most breathtaking caves and a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
Discover a 3 km maze of corridors and chambers (with about 1 km accessible to visitors), showcasing towering stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, soda-straws, aragonite crystals, and rare gravity-defying helictites. Enter through the 8 m-high antechamber into a grand hall where formations like “The Flames” rise nearly 35 m.
The cave is home to the endemic 3 mm isopod, Alistratia beroni, along with bats and unique cave organisms found nowhere else.
A flat, paved path ensures the cave is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Guided tours last approximately 60 minutes. Photography inside the cave is prohibited to protect the delicate environment. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 17–20 °C with humidity levels of 70–75% throughout the year.
- The Cave of River Aggitis - Aggitis Cave is a standout among European caves, featuring a living underground river and massive geological formations. The surrounding gorge offers outdoor activities like hiking and rafting, enriched by local myths connecting the landscape to ancient Greek legends. Together, they create an unforgettable experience in the Drama region.
As Greece’s longest and largest river cave (total length over 21 km) and the only one of its kind in the country, approximately 500 m are open to visitors. Initially explored in the 1950s and more thoroughly from 1978 onwards, visitors can now explore around 500 m inside.
Inside, a raised walkway guides visitors above the flowing river, amidst dramatic stalactites—some nearly 2 m in diameter that touch the water’s surface—vividly colored by minerals like iron, manganese, and copper.
The “Hall of the Wheel,” a vaulted chamber about 40 m wide and up to 15 m high, features an old hydraulic wheel once used to irrigate local tobacco fields. Open year-round.
