• Indian Head River Trailhead - The tour begins here, featuring the historic “Welcome to Sequoia National Park” sign and a trail leading to the river. Even if hiking isn’t on the agenda, the view from the parking area is breathtaking.
• Foothills Visitor Center - This center is perfect for gaining insight into the day’s adventures. It offers a souvenir shop, exhibits on park history and wildlife, restrooms, and a water bottle filling station.
• Tunnel Rock - A must-see on the left of Generals Highway, Tunnel Rock was once part of the highway but now serves as a popular photo spot. Visitors can climb or walk under it.
• Potwisha Campground - Located on the left of Generals Highway, the overflow parking across the street is today’s tour stop. This riverside dirt lot is the trailhead for the 5-mile (8km) moderately difficult Hospital Rock Trail along the Kaweah River. The Potwisha Riverwalk is an easy half-mile round trip.
• Hospital Rock - This stop features Potwisha Native American rock art on a large riverside rock. Nearby are grinding mortars, believed to be used by Potwisha women for grinding acorns. Picnic tables and restrooms are available.
• Amphitheater Point - A stunning panoramic spot offering views of Moro Rock and other peaks. It’s one of the park’s best vistas.
• Vista Point - Another excellent roadside view of Sequoia’s beauty. Pull over to enjoy the scenery. Keep an eye on the map as it can be easy to miss.
• The Four Guardsmen - Not a formal stop, but you can pull over on the right. Otherwise, slow down to admire the four giant sequoias lining the highway, welcoming you to the Giant Forest.
• Giant Forest Museum - Home to many magnificent giant sequoias, including the famous General Sherman Tree. The museum is a great starting point for hikes, like the easy half-mile Big Trees Trail.
• Moro Rock - Climb 350 concrete steps to the top of this granite dome. Though short, the steep trail can be tiring. The view from the top is unparalleled, offering a “top of the world” feeling.
• Tunnel Log - A unique feature where a log was carved through for traffic. Cars up to eight feet tall can drive through, while others go around. A fun photo opportunity.
• Crescent Meadow Picnic Area - Known as “the Gem of the Sierras,” this area is the starting point for several trails. A 1.5-mile loop around the meadow is easy, and it’s also 1.5 miles to Tharp’s Log. The trailhead for the challenging High Sierra Trail is here too, with a short hike to Eagle View.
• General Sherman Tree - The park’s star attraction, known as the world’s largest living tree by volume. A paved 1-mile trail leads from the parking area through a sequoia forest. Continue on the Congress Trail for a 3-mile round trip to more sequoias.
• Lodgepole Visitor Center - A perfect spot for a relaxing break, featuring presentations on the park’s natural and human history. Lodgepole Market is nearby for food and essentials.
• Tokopah Falls - The trailhead is near the campsites, offering a mix of forest and mountain views leading to a stunning waterfall. The 4-mile (6km) hike has an easy incline. The waterfall is 1,200 feet (400 meters) tall, with peak flow in early summer.
• Wuksachi Lodge - Ideal for a break from hiking, with two restaurants, an outdoor deck, and a souvenir shop with snacks.
• Halstead Meadow - A restored wetland off Generals Highway, with picnic tables and greenery, perfect for relaxing and planning your next steps.
• Little Baldy Trail - A favorite for its views at the dome’s top. The 3-mile (5km) round trip is moderately challenging, with switchbacks leading to panoramic views of the Great Western Divide.
