- Peten - The tour kicks off at a convenient and welcoming meeting spot on the picturesque Isla de Flores at 7:30 a.m. by the I LOVE PETEN sign, from where the group will depart for the jungle to embark on this amazing adventure. Experience the grandeur of Tikal National Park, one of the world’s most remarkable Mayan cities, where history and nature blend into an unforgettable journey. Along the way, explore temples, plazas, and ancient structures surrounded by wildlife, while uncovering the secrets of Mayan civilization. Listen to the jungle’s sounds, observe howler monkeys, and enjoy breathtaking views from the temple tops. This is more than just a tour; it’s an experience that connects you to the history, nature, and magic of Tikal.
- Tikal Visitor Center - Upon arrival at the Visitor Center, you will get your first glimpse of the magnificence of this ancient Mayan city. Here, an impressive scale model of Tikal awaits, perfect for understanding the size and layout of its temples, plazas, and structures before venturing into the jungle. You will also have access to amenities such as restrooms, a restaurant, a cafeteria, and local craft shops. Then, the group will pass through the entrance control and begin the true experience: an immersive hike through jungle trails, surrounded by natural sounds and wildlife. Along the way, the local guide will not only lead you from one point to another but will also connect you to the surroundings, dynamically explaining the flora, fauna, and archaeological secrets that made Tikal one of the most powerful civilizations in the Mayan world. Every step brings you closer to an unforgettable moment until, suddenly, the jungle opens up to reveal the majestic Central Square, the heart of Tikal.
- Tikal - Before entering Tikal National Park, it is recommended to purchase your admission ticket in advance for convenience and speed. Tickets can be bought online through the official website of the Government of Guatemala: https://boletos.culturaguate.com/. The entry fee is Q150.00 per person. If you choose to buy it locally, please note that payment is accepted only in cash and in Guatemalan quetzales. Once this process is complete, the transportation tour will continue for approximately 20 more minutes to the Visitor Center, where the exploration of this impressive Mayan city in the jungle will begin.
- Great Plaza - This stunning open space is surrounded by some of Tikal’s most iconic structures: The imposing Temple of the Great Jaguar (Temple I), built as a tomb for the ruler Jasaw Chan K’awiil I, one of the most significant figures in the city’s history. Directly opposite is Temple II (Temple of Masks), offering one of the best panoramic views of the entire plaza. Additionally, the Mayan Ball Game, where rituals that transcended sport were performed, is linked to the worldview and the balance between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Here, every structure tells a story, from sacred rituals to the political power that dominated much of the Mayan world. This is undoubtedly one of the most striking moments of the tour, where Tikal’s greatness is revealed in all its glory, surrounded by the jungle and enveloped in an atmosphere that connects past and present.
- Tikal Temple III - Temple III, also known as the Grand Priest Temple, is one of the tallest structures in Tikal National Park, reaching approximately 55 meters in height. Built around 810 AD, this temple is notable for its impressive crest (structure at the top), which still retains carved details depicting high-ranking figures, possibly an important ruler or priest. Although not always accessible for climbing, its majesty can be appreciated from various points on the site, serving as a clear example of the power and architectural sophistication of the Mayan civilization in its final years of splendor.
- Temple IV - Standing at approximately 70 meters high, it is the tallest pyramid on the site and one of the highest in the entire Mayan civilization.
View over the jungle
Climbing to its top is a unique experience: from above, you can see the rainforest canopy and other Mayan temples rising among them. It is renowned for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Connection with astronomy
It is aligned in such a way that other important temples can be observed from its top, suggesting ceremonial and astronomical use.
It was the scene of Star Wars
Scenes from the rebel base on Yavin’s moon were filmed here in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, making it even more iconic worldwide.
Dedicated to a powerful ruler
It was constructed around 741 AD by the Mayan ruler Yik’in Chan K’awiil, one of the most significant in the city.
-
Lost World - This is the oldest ceremonial plaza in Tikal, built around 400 BC, long before the great temples that are widely known were erected.
Design and structure: The plaza is very wide and rectangular, with several platforms and stairs that served for public rituals and religious ceremonies. Its construction reflects the Mayan mastery of architecture and urban planning.
Social and ceremonial function: It was used as a gathering place for the community, as well as a site for astronomical observations, as the structures around it are aligned with important solar events, such as solstices and equinoxes.
Visitor experience: Walking through the plaza allows you to imagine the life of the ancient Mayans, their rituals, and celebrations, making it feel like you are treading on a real lost world, almost intact after more than two thousand years of history.
