- Bunk’Art 1 - Bunk Art 1 stands out as the most innovative museum in Tirana, housed within a massive communist-era bunker. From 1945 to 1992, Albania was under the rule of communist leader Enver Hoxha, who, fearing a foreign nuclear attack, constructed 750,000 bunkers across the country. Although the anticipated attack never occurred and the communist regime ended in 1992, many bunkers remain unused.
The extensive bunker that hosts Bunk Art 1 was originally designed to shelter the dictator and his government in the event of an attack. This five-story underground complex features over 100 rooms and numerous hallways, yet it was never utilized.
Today, the bunker has been transformed into a fascinating museum showcasing Albania’s history. Visitors can listen to Enver Hoxha’s phone conversations, view old TV footage, learn about nuclear weapons, and explore the dictator’s quarters. It offers a unique glimpse into the dark years of communist rule in Albania. In essence, Bunk Art 1 is Albania’s most impressive museum, albeit with a slightly eerie atmosphere.
