- Skanderbeg Square - The intricate history of Albania is vividly displayed at the core of Tirana, the capital city, in the renowned Skanderbeg Square, named after the national medieval hero. This ever-evolving urban space offers a remarkable insight into Albania’s complex historical progression throughout the 20th century. Visitors will learn fascinating facts and stories about the key buildings surrounding the square: The National Historic Museum, The National Opera House, the Old Clock Tower, and the Et’hem Bej Mosque.
- Clock Tower - Open to tourists since 1996, a mere 90 steps lead to the top of this cultural monument in Tirana. Constructed in 1840 during the Ottoman Empire, despite being encircled by modern high-rises, it still provides a unique panoramic view of the city center. Standing at 35 meters, it was Tirana’s tallest structure until 1970.
-
Et`hem Bey Mosque - The Et’hem Bey Mosque is the sole religious monument that survived the harsh Albanian Cultural Revolution. Built in 1823, it remains one of the most prominent landmarks in Tirana’s city center. Visitors and worshippers can admire the newly restored floral patterns and vibrant frescoes. The tour guide will share intriguing insights and stories about the nuanced history of Islam in Albania.
- Rruga Murat Toptani - A stroll to Tirana Castle is delightful any time of the year! Excavations in 2001 and 2008 uncovered remnants of Tirana’s castle walls dating back to Emperor Justinian’s era in the 4th to 6th centuries. Although little of the castle walls remain due to wars and destruction, the area is now a vibrant hub of arts and crafts, bustling with charming cafés, restaurants, and art galleries, worth visiting day or night, all year round.
- Tanners’ Bridge - Ura e Tabakëve, also known as The Tanners’ Bridge, is an 18th-century stone footbridge from the Ottoman period, located near the Albanian Parliament. Once a crucial link between Tirana and the eastern highlands, it stands as a testament to the area’s fine bridge construction. It was primarily used by farmers to transport produce and livestock, hence the name “tabakë” in Albanian, referring to butchering and tanning. The bridge spanned the Lana stream until the 1930s when the river was diverted, leading to the bridge’s decline. As a testament to Tirana’s 18th-century urban development, Ura e Tabakëve is considered a significant cultural heritage monument, undergoing extensive restoration in the 1990s. The restoration included showcasing the bridge’s foundations, cleaning, and restoring its original stones, and creating an artificial pond on both sides, now used exclusively by pedestrians.
- National Gallery of Art - The Albanian National Gallery of Arts (GKA), established on January 11th, 1954, is a treasure trove of impressive social realism masterpieces and the finest Albanian figurative arts showcased globally. Although temporarily closed for expansion, it still offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate its sparse and minimalist exterior design, especially the hidden social realist statues of Eastern European Communist leaders like Stalin and Lenin nearby. In front of the gallery stands REJA, also known as The Cloud, designed by renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, which has become a beloved venue for late-night film screenings, performing arts festivals, and live concerts.
- Blloku - Everything heard or read about Tirana’s Blloku is true, as it is the city’s must-visit hub, now flourishing with trendy bars and cafes, an enviable nightlife, chic restaurants, luxury boutiques, and upscale residences. Before becoming this vibrant hotspot, during Communist rule, Blloku was a restricted area for the party elite, featuring the modest, modern-style villa of Albania’s long-time dictator Enver Hoxha at its center. Besides the infamous house where many fates were decided during the regime, the area also hosts the monumental Presidenca e Republikës, the office of the Albanian president.
