• Postbllok - Checkpoint Monument - Our journey begins at Postblloku (Checkpoint Memorial), a poignant homage to the victims of Albania’s communist regime. This outdoor exhibit features authentic elements from the dictatorship, including a concrete bunker, a segment of the Berlin Wall, and steel structures from a forced labor camp. Situated on Tirana’s main boulevard, it serves as a stark reminder of the country’s prolonged isolation and oppression under Enver Hoxha.
• Blloku - Next, we visit the Blloku neighborhood, once the most restricted area in the country, reserved solely for the communist elite. Here, we will see the former residence of Enver Hoxha, Albania’s long-time dictator. Once cloaked in secrecy, Blloku now symbolizes Tirana’s evolution, bustling with cafés, street art, and modern vibrancy.
• House of Leaves Museum - En route to Skanderbeg Square, we will pass by the House of Leaves, the former headquarters of the communist-era secret police (Sigurimi).
• Skanderbeg Square - We will then arrive at Skanderbeg Square, the heart of Tirana. During the communist era, this square was the venue for military parades and political rallies. It also marks the end of communism, as it was here that the statue of Enver Hoxha stood until its removal in 1991.
• BunkArt 2 - We will pass by BUNKART, one of Tirana’s most fascinating museums, originally designed as a nuclear bunker to protect the Albanian communist leader and his close associates during the Cold War.
• Rruga Murat Toptani - Our next stop is Tirana Castle, a centuries-old structure that endured through the communist era. Recently revitalized, the castle now merges modernity with tradition.
• Tirana - Understanding Albania’s communist era involves recognizing its extreme stance on religion. In 1967, Albania was declared the world’s first atheist state, with all religious practices banned and institutions closed or repurposed by the regime. As we pass Namazgah Mosque, the Orthodox Resurrection Cathedral, and St. Paul’s Catholic Cathedral, we’ll reflect on the suppression of religious identity and its transformation since the fall of communism.
