Yala National Park spans a vast area along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, stretching from Okanda to Hambantota. The region’s history dates back several centuries, with records indicating it was abandoned three centuries ago due to ‘unhealthy conditions,’ as noted by 16th-century Spanish cartographer Cipriano Sanchez. This was likely due to the swamps and dangerous wildlife that caused various diseases, which were untreatable at the time. Later, the Yala region was designated a Forest Reserve by the British Colonial Government in 1900. A section of the reserve was set aside as an exclusive game reserve for local sportsmen to hunt. In 1938, legislation was enacted to establish Yala as a National Park.
