Narabi Jizo - In Buddhism, Jizo is a significant Bodhisattva. The tale tells of young children who, after passing, go to Sai-no-kawara, the dried-up riverbed of souls in the underworld. Due to their limited experience (karma), they must build small stone towers, each representing a prayer. However, every night, oni, or devils, destroy these towers, forcing the young souls to start anew.
Jizo comes to their aid, wandering and hiding the children in his red bibs, ensuring their safety. The red bibs likely have historical significance. During the Asuka period (522-645AD), children with illnesses like chickenpox wore red bibs to distinguish them from others. Red is also considered a color of protection and security.
