“Kenbu” is a traditional Japanese stage performance art that incorporates the Katana (a traditional Japanese sword) and a traditional Japanese fan, while expressing the poems recited or sung by the Samurai.
TOKYO Samurai Kenbu provides a 90-minute Samurai Sword & Kenbu Experience. Participants can try on the attire worn in Kenbu performances, learn to handle a Japanese sword or fan in an enjoyable manner, and immerse themselves in the Samurai way!
Currently, the workshops are held in rental studios located conveniently throughout Tokyo.
Samurai Experience through Traditional Art “Kenbu”
Our goal is to allow participants to experience the spirit and form of the Samurai through the “Kenbu” workshop.
During the lesson, participants will learn basic techniques involving the use of a fan and sword, along with some footwork. At the end of the course, you can perform Kenbu to the rhythm of traditional Japanese poetry.

Samurai Experience Through Traditional Art “Kenbu”
The term “Samurai” evokes a variety of images. Most commonly, people envision Samurai as brave warriors engaged in battle. However, from the late Heian period to the Edo period, spanning approximately 700 years, Samurai not only wielded political power but also developed a distinct culture and worldview. “Kenbu” is an artistic expression of the Samurai’s aesthetic. Our workshop invites you to immerse yourself in the spirit and form of the Samurai through the “Kenbu” experience.
Participants can choose from a selection of authentic “Kenbu” performance outfits, including Kimono and Hakama, available during the workshop. After dressing in these costumes, there is time set aside for taking photos. The instructor will guide you in striking impressive Samurai poses. Remember to bring your phone to capture the moment.
