  Once the headquarters of the Order of the Knights Templar, Tomar is a city renowned for its artistic and cultural richness, epitomized by the Convent of Christ, a masterpiece of the Portuguese Renaissance.
• Convento de Cristo - Initially conceived as a monument to symbolize the Reconquest, the Convent of the Knights Templar of Tomar (transferred in 1344 to the Knights of the Order of Christ) came to represent the opposite during the Manueline period – Portugal’s openness to other civilizations.
• Castelo de Almourol - Located in the middle of the River Tagus, the mysterious Almourol Castle is one of the most iconic monuments of the Christian reconquest.

Positioned on an island in the River Tagus, Almourol is one of Portugal’s most unique castles, notable for its historical importance and picturesque surroundings.

Its history recalls the Reconquest of Portuguese territory during the Middle Ages. When the Christians arrived in 1129, the castle was already known as Almorolan and was soon incorporated into the lands under the protection of the Knights Templar, led by Master Gualdim Pais. An inscription at the castle’s entrance notes that reconstruction began in 1171.

• Castelo de Tomar - Tomar originated from King Afonso Henriques’ 1159 donation of the Ceras Castle to the Knights Templar. The area was traversed in the south by the Tomar River, with its fertile valley to the west and steep foothills. On one of these foothills, Master D. Gualdim Pais founded the Tomar castle and village in 1160.
  The castle was constructed with a series of walls encircling the structure. Inside, two walls divided the area into three distinct sections. In the southern part of the fortress was the villa area, now an orange grove. On the highest part of the foothill to the north, the Templar military house was established, flanked to the west by the Master’s house, the Alcáçova with its tower, and to the east by the knights’ oratory, the Charola. These two areas were separated by the castle’s expansive yard, now a landscaped garden.
