- Tomar - Embark on a journey tracing the path of the Templar Knights with a day trip from Lisbon to the historic sites of Almourol Castle, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, and the Convent of Christ in Tomar. This excursion blends stunning landscapes, medieval architecture, and the profound symbolism of one of history’s most intriguing military orders. Travel in comfort with an expert guide and uncover the profound significance of the Templar legacy in Portugal.
Begin your day with a scenic drive from Lisbon to the banks of the Tejo River. The first stop is the fairy-tale-like Castle of Almourol, dramatically perched on a small island in the river. A brief boat ride (included) takes you across the waters to this 12th-century fortress, a symbol of Portugal. Stroll along its walls and towers as your guide shares insights into the castle’s strategic importance during the Christian Reconquest and its legendary ties to the Templar Knights.
- Convento de Cristo - The Convent of Christ is the name commonly used for the monumental complex that includes the Templar Castle of Tomar, the Renaissance Convent of the Order of Christ, the conventual fence now known as the Wood of the Seven Mountains, the Hermitage of the Immaculate Conception, and the conventual aqueduct, also called the Aqueduct of the Pegons. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it features some of the most significant examples of Portuguese architectural history. Its seven centuries of construction reflect key moments in Portugal’s history. The castle was established in 1160 with the founding of Tomar by the Templars. After the Templars were dissolved in 1312, it became the headquarters of the Order of Christ, and under the administration of Infante D. Henry (1420 - 60), the conventual buildings emerged around two Gothic cloisters: the Claustro di Lavaggio and the Cemetery.
- Castelo de Tomar - The Castle of Tomar, also known as the Templar’s Castle, is renowned for having served as the headquarters of the Temple Order in Portugal. Its construction dates back to the era of D. Afonso Henriques, who granted the region of Ceras to the Temple Order, initiating its construction in 1160 by D. Gualdim Pais, a Templar master and founder of the city of Tomar. He introduced innovative military architectural techniques from the East, such as the alambor and the house tower. Various inscriptions are visible in the stones, referencing the Temple Order.
Pay particular attention to Charola, the highlight of this monumental ensemble, a unique example of military and religious architecture that evokes the Holy Sepulchre and the Temple of Solomon. Upon entering, you will be awed by the grandeur of this space, which served as a chapel for the Templars.
- Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais - The Church of Santa Maria do Olival is the burial place of Portuguese Templar Masters. It was constructed in the 13th century atop the original church of the Temple Order, which itself was built on an earlier structure, a monastery belonging to the order of St. Benedict during the Visigothic period.
The architecture showcases the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. The side chapels and the south gallery are in Renaissance style, dating from the 16th century. The tomb of Gualdim Pais (in the second side chapel), the figure of Our Lady (by Diogo Pires-o-Velho), the Renaissance tomb of the first Bishop of Funchal (in the main chapel on the left), and the chapel of Simon Preto with 17th-century tiles are all noteworthy.
This church became the “Mother Church” of all churches in Asia, Africa, and America by a papal bull from Pope Calisto III on March 13, 1455. This decree established its ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the overseas territories and their inhabitants.
