- Gooderham (Flatiron) Building - This is Toronto’s Flatiron Building, constructed in 1892, and indeed, it predates the more renowned one in New York. It was crafted to fit into this peculiar wedge of land, giving it the appearance of slicing through traffic like a ship’s bow. It was owned by the Gooderham family, who amassed their wealth in whiskey, so if the building seems a bit self-assured… that might be the reason.
- Berczy Park - Berczy Park is one of Toronto’s most delightful public areas, nestled just behind the historic Flatiron Building. At its heart is the city’s most cherished fountain, featuring numerous cast-iron dogs of various shapes and sizes, all gazing at a single golden bone atop. It’s a playful homage to the neighborhood’s dog-loving residents and a reminder that even in a bustling downtown, Toronto still finds room for a touch of whimsy.
- St James Anglican Cathedral - Discover the center of spiritual life for Toronto’s affluent and influential over a century ago at this Anglican cathedral. The fifth to be built here, the current structure was completed in 1853, following a devastating fire that destroyed the heart of Toronto in 1849 during our first “Great Fire”. It served as the church for the first British settlers and stood as a symbol of authority for the ruling class throughout much of the city’s history.
If the church is open to the public, there will be an opportunity to take a look inside!
- Old Town - The majority of this tour occurs in Old Town Toronto, where your guide will share numerous stories and sites with you. Toronto’s evolution from a small military town established to support a nearby fort (Fort York - in the west end of downtown) to a thriving city will be detailed during your visit.
- St. Lawrence Market - National Geographic Traveller Magazine once named this the “best market in the world,” making it a must-see for anyone exploring Old Town Toronto. Closed on Mondays (and civic holidays), it’s a place worth scheduling additional time to explore after your guide provides an overview of its history and importance to both the early Town of York and the modern Toronto it became. Not only a popular tourist spot, the St. Lawrence Market attracts locals seeking specialty and locally-produced items like gourmet mustards, Ontario wines and cheeses, and the renowned peameal bacon sandwich.
If you’ve worked up an appetite during your walk, the food and drink at the St. Lawrence Market serve as the grand finale. Enjoy a peameal bacon sandwich, a butter tart, a famous soft drink invented just blocks away, and more!
