The New Port (Tourlos) serves as the main port of Mykonos, handling typical passenger ferries and cruise ships exclusively. It is located 3 km north of Mykonos Town. Whether traveling from Athens ports (Piraeus, Rafina, or Lavrio) or another island on a typical passenger ferry or cruise ship, arrivals and departures occur at the New Mykonos Port (Tourlos).
The old port in Mykonos, located in Mykonos Town (Chora), was the main port for ferries until 20 years ago. Nowadays, it is used by some fishermen and yachts.
- Mykonos Town - The town is a Cycladic village built amphitheatrically, also known as Chora, following the Greek tradition when the island’s name matches the principal town’s name. A multitude of bars and nightclubs can be found in the capital, proving Mykonos’ reputation as a party island is well-deserved. It features whitewashed cubic houses with colorful wooden doors, windows, and balconies, and narrow streets forming a labyrinth. Numerous cafes, chic boutiques, souvenir shops, and fine jewelry stores enhance visitors’ enjoyment in the beautiful capital. Notable sights in Town include the church complex of Panagia Paraportiani, the famous whitewashed windmills, a trademark of the island, and Little Venice, one of the most beautiful parts of the capital, offering a stunning and unique image that captivates everyone with its incredible beauty and magical atmosphere. Another island trademark is Petros the pelican.
- Agios Ioannis Beach - Agios Ioannis is a small tourist village in the southwest of the island, 2.5 km from Ornos. It is built amphitheatrically and located across from Delos, combining natural beauty with excellent tourist accommodations. Pink and purple flowers adorn the stairways and balconies of the white houses. The lovely sandy beach of Agios Ioannis, with crystal-clear waters, is named after the church located here. The beach is ideal for those seeking peace and relaxation.
A wide variety of restaurants, taverns offering delicious Greek cuisine, and numerous water sports opportunities, from scuba diving to surfing in turquoise waters, are available. The nearby villages provide opportunities to explore the streets, admire classical architecture, or enjoy a picturesque view of nearby Delos Island. Scenes from the 1989 movie ‘Shirley Valentine’ were filmed in Agios Ioannis.
- Delos - While in Ag. Ioannis, take the opportunity to admire the famous island of Delos.
Delos is a Greek island and archaeological site in the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades archipelago, opposite Mykonos Island. The mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis was a major religious center and port during the 1st millennium B.C. The island’s ruins include Doric temples, a synagogue, markets, an amphitheater, houses with mosaics, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues. The Archaeological Museum displays statues excavated from the site.
The entire island is designated as an archaeological site, specifically a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s a historical treasure, floating serenely on the Aegean Sea, just a few miles from cosmopolitan Mykonos.
On the next visit, there will be more time in Mykonos, offering a chance to explore the revival of Greek civilization’s glory. It’s the spiritual heart of the Cyclades, the birthplace of the immortals. It’s Delos.
- Faros Armenistis - A testament to Mykonos’ maritime history and a fully functioning lighthouse, this landmark is a must-see! Located at “Fanari,” which means “lantern” in Greek, the scenic coastal road offers some of the island’s most spectacular views, just 7 km from Chora.
The Lighthouse of Armenistis (Faros Armenistis) was built in 1891, following the sinking of an English steamship off the island’s coasts. The Lighthouse became a famous attraction due to its imposing presence and its award-winning mechanism at the Paris International Expo. Today, this mechanism is housed at the Aegean Maritime Museum, located in downtown Mykonos, in the Tria Pigadia area.
Visitors can also explore the Armenistis area where the Lighthouse is located and enjoy the unique view of the neighboring island of Tinos.
- Ano Mera - Head to the central and southeast parts of the island, admiring the beautiful snow-white houses with many opportunities to take stunning photographs in the early morning when the city is still quiet. Pass Ftelia Bay on the way to Ano Mera village, where there will be a short stop and 15 minutes of free time to capture the charming village square, bordered by outdoor taverns and coffee shops.
- Monastery of Panayia Tourliani - The Byzantine monastery of Panagia Tourliani is located almost in the heart of the island, just 8 km from the capital of Mykonos, Chora. Visit the historic monastery of Panagia Tourliani, one of the island’s main attractions, built in the 15th century. The all-white monastery is situated right in front of the village’s main square.
The reverence for the Virgin Mary is profound and central to the religious devotion of the pious Mykonians, as is the case in the rest of the Cycladic islands. The soul of the Mykonians resides in Panagia Tourliani, the patron saint of this island, and its historical monastery.
The historic monastery of Panagia Tourliani, which embodies the religious faith of Mykonians and the protector of the island, was founded in 1542.
- Elia - Continue the tour to experience some of Mykonos Island’s most famous beaches and beach clubs. Choose to visit Platιs Galos, Paraga, Super Paradise, Elia Beach, or Kalo Livadi, located on the southern side of Mykonos Island. Known for their lively bars and cosmopolitan vibes, this tour is perfect for experiencing a beach party during the day. It’s the ideal time to savor great flavors and sip cocktails.
The recommendation is Elia Beach, the largest on the island, offering comfortable sunbeds, water sports, and beach bars and restaurants. Protected from the northern summer winds and with views of Naxos Island, Elia is a sandy and vibrant beach. For comfort, there are separate nudist and gay areas.
- Kalafatis - The next stop is Kalafatis Beach. Here, enjoy the view, have a coffee or refreshment, or lunch (not included). If desired, swimming is an option here as it is one of the most beautiful beaches on Mykonos Island! Kalafatis Beach is a long sandy stretch under a clear blue sky.
It is considered one of the island’s largest beaches, popular with families with children and those who enjoy water sports, especially windsurfing. Water skiing, jet skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, diving, etc., are available for visitors.
Being away from the more touristy beaches, it remains less developed, but it has a few hotels and restaurants. Kalafatis is equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs available for rent at a small price. There are hotels and villas of various prices, mini-markets, taverns, and cafes with fresh seafood all around the beach and its outskirts.
Kalafatis offers a great opportunity to rest both body and soul, combining active leisure with sunbathing.
