This is a genuine ritual featuring the original live sounds and movements reminiscent of past centuries in Istanbul. The performance at the ceremony is deeply rooted in classic Sufi music, which is crucial for setting the pace and uplifting the dervishes’ spirits.

The whirling dervishes step forward to dissolve the barrier between the physical and the spiritual. All participants, including the musicians (mıtraban) and performers (semazen), are local adherents of the order. Therefore, there are no actors in this ceremony.

This unique ceremony is primarily a poetic experience. The original name “Sema” holds two meanings: the skies and hearing. The dervishes raise their hands while whirling to connect with the universe, its creation, and its movement. This is their path to achieving human maturity in an ecstatic moment filled with love.

Although it has never been mainstream, the Mevlevi Order has played a significant role in this city of coexistence, and the aim is to preserve it.
