Setting Sail to Gramvousa

The anticipation was palpable as we gathered at the Port of Kissamos, ready to embark on a private sailing tour to Gramvousa and Balos. Our vessel for the day was a sleek Beneteau 48, captained by the affable Skipper Christopher. As a marine biologist, the allure of the ocean is irresistible, and this trip promised both adventure and tranquility. The boat was the perfect size for our group of eight, offering ample space to relax and enjoy the journey.

As we motored around the point, the island of Gramvousa came into view, its rugged beauty framed by the azure sea. We anchored in the crystal-clear waters, a mere 30 meters from the shore. Some of us chose to swim, while others took the dinghy to the beach. The highlight of Gramvousa was undoubtedly the hike to the Venetian fort. The panoramic views from the top were breathtaking, a reminder of the island’s storied past and its natural splendor.

A Taste of Crete

Back on the boat, Christopher treated us to a delightful lunch featuring classic Cretan dishes. Our next destination was Balos Beach, a place that had long been on my travel bucket list. The beach lived up to its reputation, with its pristine sands and turquoise waters. We anchored and swam to shore, the water cool and invigorating. The lagoon at Balos was a revelation, its warm, bath-like waters a stark contrast to the refreshing chill of the open sea. It was a serene moment, floating in the lagoon, surrounded by the stunning landscape.

The Journey Back

As the day drew to a close, we returned to the boat, our spirits lifted by the day’s adventures. The journey back to Kissamos was a time for reflection, the sun setting on the horizon casting a golden glow over the water. Although we didn’t get to sail due to the lack of wind, the experience was no less magical. The tranquility of the sea, the camaraderie of our group, and the expert guidance of Skipper Christopher made this a day to remember.
