- Hawthorne Vineyards - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Recognized as one of the finest vineyards in Traverse City, visitors can enjoy and savor some of the best red and white wines on the peninsula. Red wine enthusiasts can try the Merlot/Cab Franc blend, while white wine lovers can sample the Auxerrois or Dry Riesling. Guests can also enjoy a popcorn flight and a charcuterie board. This is one of the newest and most promising wineries on Old Mission Peninsula.
Hawthorne Vineyards is arguably the most secluded tasting room on Old Mission Peninsula. The tasting room is perched on a high bluff, offering views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Visitors will be surrounded by nature—no traffic, no close neighbors—just vineyards, woods, and water.
Guests can enjoy views of both bays from the tasting room. An outdoor patio area provides a relaxing environment with stunning bay views and a cozy outdoor fireplace.
- Bowers Harbor Vineyards - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Established in 1991, Bowers Harbor Vineyards is one of the original wineries in the area. Once a horse farm, the estate now features 20 acres of vinifera vines. The inviting tasting room, a former horse stable, is staffed by friendly individuals who will introduce guests to an extensive selection of top wines by the glass, bottle, or flight.
Bowers Harbor Vineyards is affectionately known as the “dog winery,” and guests may encounter various dogs during their visit.
The vineyard grows Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The standout is the Pinot Secco (a sparkling Pinot Grigio) and the Pinot Secco Rose (Magic Mike’s favorite).
Guests can order wine flights and enjoy them on the patio, by the fire pit, in the pavilion, or at tables nestled among the vines.
- Chateau Chantal Winery & Tasting Room - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Chateau Chantal is situated atop one of the highest points on Old Mission Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of both East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay.
The highlight here is the Ice Wine, which is quite rare. Guests can sample the Ice Wine that was served at a White House dinner during President Obama’s administration. Tour participants can customize wine flights, and Chateau Chantal is the only winery on Old Mission Peninsula where guests can purchase a glass of Brandy. Wine enthusiasts can choose from selections like Dry Riesling, the remarkable Pinot Blanc, the popular Naughty Red, and Malbec.
Chateau Chantal is one of the original wineries in Traverse City, Michigan, known for its exceptional wine, outstanding customer service, and unforgettable views.
- Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery - Tour participants always adore Brys Estates, one of Michigan’s Top Ten most popular wineries. Guests will quickly discover that the secret to Brys’ success might be the Froze’, a frozen wine drink that is perfect on a hot summer day. Guests can choose from various toppers, and this drink is the winery’s best seller.
Tour participants can purchase the only Sauvignon Blanc on Old Mission Peninsula or try the “porch pounder,” a rare Pinot Noir Riesling blend. Guests can also enjoy a customizable tasting of various wines and then head to the deck for a fantastic photo opportunity. The lawn bar is open during the summer months, making it one of the best locations in Traverse City to sample wines. Snack packs are also available for purchase.
Another popular attraction for guests is the lavender soaps and lotions, grown by the Brys family and available for purchase.
- Bonobo Winery - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
A place where guests feel like movie stars, with wines they can’t wait to brag about and share. Bonobo Winery was founded by brothers and longtime Traverse City natives, Todd and Carter Oosterhouse. The winery offers stunning views, excellent wines, and top-notch customer service.
Tour participants can sample expert-level red wines like the BDX and a top-shelf Pinot Noir. White wine lovers can try a bubbly Blanc de Blancs, exceptional Chardonnays, and a Fume Blanc. This is the only winery on Old Mission Peninsula where guests can sample a glass of whiskey. Frozen drink enthusiasts can enjoy a frozen lemonade lavender vodka-based drink. Guests can also indulge in delicious pretzel bites, an expert-level charcuterie board, or fried goat cheese (food availability may vary). This winery is one of the most memorable stops on the wine tour—it’s truly an experience.
- Grand Traverse Bay - Grand Traverse Bay is an extension of Lake Michigan. The bay is separated from the rest of Lake Michigan by the Leelanau Peninsula. It stretches approximately 32 miles long, ranges from 7 to 10 miles wide, and reaches depths of up to 620 feet in certain areas. It is the second-largest bay of Lake Michigan, following Green Bay.
Grand Traverse Bay received its name from 18th-century French voyageurs who made “la grande traverse,” or a long trek or crossing, across the bay’s mouth.
The most notable feature of Grand Traverse Bay is its division into East and West arms by the Old Mission Peninsula.
During the tour, as guests travel from Traverse City to Hawthorne Vineyards, they will enjoy stunning views of the East Bay. The drive from Hawthorne to Bowers offers views of the West Bay. Throughout the tour, guests will see views of both East and West Bays. The breathtaking views are a significant highlight of this award-winning tour.
- Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail - Book and experience what tens of thousands of wine enthusiasts and guests have already fallen in love with—Traverse City Wine Country! The renowned Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail is perfect for your next Movie Stars Wine Tour! Create lasting memories with friends and family during your next vacation or weekend getaway!
During the award-winning Old Mission Peninsula tour, guests will be treated to views of destinations such as the beautiful East and West Grand Traverse Bays, Bowers Harbor, The Bowers Harbor Inn, The Boathouse Restaurant, Jolly Pumpkin, Bryant Park, and more.
One of the key highlights is the microclimate created by the surrounding bays, making this region ideal for producing a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and, of course, grapes. The East and West bays remain warmer in the fall, extending the growing season. After winter, the bays stay cool in spring, preventing damaging frost and allowing local vineyards to thrive.
