- Floyd’s Pelican Bar - Floyd’s Pelican Bar is a charming little bar constructed from driftwood, perched on a large sandbar approximately ¾ mile out at sea. Situated in Parottee Bay on Jamaica’s South Coast, it is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary spots globally to enjoy a meal and a drink – arguably the finest bar in the Caribbean!
This bar is truly a conversation starter. It’s a small establishment made from driftwood, located on a vast sandbar about a mile or less offshore. It offers a unique dining experience. Accessing the bar requires a 20-minute boat ride. Once there, visitors can swim, sunbathe, and savor fish or lobster while enjoying a refreshing drink. If planning to dine, it’s advisable to inform the boat driver to call ahead, as there is no formal dining area. The interior decor is unique, adorned with relics from various places. Guests can leave a memento or carve their initials into the wood if they wish.
- Holland Bamboo - Bamboo Avenue - St. Elizabeth
One of the most breathtaking sights on the south coast main road is Bamboo Avenue, located in the Holland area of St. Elizabeth Parish. Bamboo Avenue is a two-and-a-half-mile stretch of road between Lacovia and Middle Quarters, lined with towering bamboo plants that arch over the road to form a shaded tunnel. Established in the 17th century by the Holland Estate owners, it was designed to provide shade for travelers and protect the road from erosion.
Other bamboo avenues exist in Jamaica, typically in mountainous areas. However, the bamboo avenue in Holland is the longest and the only one covering a busy road.
Restoration project
The bamboo coverage was once much denser than it is now, but recent weather events, notably Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004, have significantly thinned it. Travelers often stop here for photos.
- Middle Quarters - Middle Quarters - St. Elizabeth
The small village of Middle Quarters, just outside Black River, is renowned throughout Jamaica for one specialty - “Pepper Shrimp.” Local vendors line the road, enticing travelers with bags of bright red, spicy pepper shrimp. From their simple stalls, usually consisting of Dutch pots boiling on open grills and plastic bowls filled with shrimp on a creaky wooden table, they offer one of the island’s tastiest snacks.
The shrimp is boiled in salty water infused with crushed scotch bonnet peppers. The spicy and salty flavors blend perfectly when absorbed into the shrimp.
Most of the shrimp are caught in the nearby Black River, though sometimes supplemented from nearby Westmoreland. Travelers can also stop here to take photos or purchase shrimp.
