Built in 1797, the Highland Light is steeped in maritime history. The guided tour of the lighthouse allows visitors to ascend to the very top! Following this, there will be a pleasant 10-minute walk to the Highland House Museum. This remarkable museum is where Henry David Thoreau stayed while working on his renowned novel, Cape Cod. Originally the first hotel on the outer Cape, each room has been transformed into “museum rooms” that illustrate what life was like in the 1800s. The museum also features maritime, Native American, and art history. The renowned artists Edward & Josephine Hopper have a dedicated room showcasing some of their incredible works from the early to mid-1900s.
- Highland House Museum - This charming museum was one of the first hotels on The Cape. Discover where Henry David Thoreau stayed during his journey while writing his book, Cape Cod! Enjoy a guided tour inside the museum to experience life in the 1800s! Please note, the Highland House Museum will not be available for the Saturday 1:00 tour due to a staffing shortage.
