- Casa Cenote - The first significant landmark you’ll encounter is Casa Cenote. Upon entering, you’ll find yourself in an entirely different world.
- Platforma Funeraria - To the left stands the Platforma Funeraria, where the ancient Mayans performed their funeral rituals. Before burial or cremation, the Mayans placed maize in the mouth of the deceased. This served as sustenance for their journey to the next world and symbolized life and rebirth.
- El Castillo - The next stop, El Castillo, is unmissable. Standing at 40 feet, The Castle was constructed to honor the Mayan God Kukulkan and is situated at the highest point in Tulum, making the already impressive structure even more striking.
- Temple of the Frescoes - As you continue walking, you’ll come across the Temple of Frescoes, famous for its intricate paintings of various Mayan deities.
- Tulum - Next, visit the Temple of the Wind, one of the most intriguing structures in Tulum. Perched atop a cliff, the Temple was built to serve as a warning of incoming storms.
The round platforms here indicate that this is a temple dedicated to the Wind God.
- Casa del Chultún - The brilliance of Mayan architecture is showcased in this building, The House of Chultun. Here, rainwater harvesting ensured that the people of Tulum had sufficient fresh water for all their needs. The building is designed so that rainwater would drain into the reservoir.
- Templo del Dios del Viento - Upon close inspection, you can see an intricate network of holes in the temple. When hurricane-force winds blow from the Caribbean, the holes whistle loudly, serving as an effective warning system.
- Great Platform - Continue past the platform and stop in front of the ruins of a house on the right. This is Casa del Noreste, or the Northwest House, which would have been home to important members of Mayan society.
- Templo Maya (Tulum Playa) - The temple features niched figurines of the Maya ‘Descending God’ or Venus prominently displayed across the main facade, reflecting the craftsmanship of Mayan artisans. The “Descending God” is depicted as a stucco figure on the western wall of the temple located in the central precinct of the site, giving the temple its name as the “Temple of the Descending God.”
