Main Event Cancelled due to Weather - Cenote Stop Great - Valladolid just OK - This was supposed to be the highlight of our trip, but due to unexpected rain - they cancelled the light show. We got all the way to Chichen Itza only to turned away in the parking lot. Our guide was great, and he did try to get ahead of it. It started raining at the end of our cenote stop so he was talking to someone that worked there. It just wasn't officially called off until we actually got there. They gave us a 500 peso refund (~$25 USD). I'm not sure if I'm completely happy with that amount though because on top of the ~$90 USD tour fee and tips, there was a mandatory 765 peso environmental tax or something added for the archeological zone and cenote so really we just got some of that tax back instead of money off of the tour. Better than nothing, I guess but it was the last day of our trip and we essentially wasted it. The quick stop in Valladolid wasn't that worth it. It was neat to see the big park and browse the vendors (I bought a magnet and handmade purse), but it was really just a stop to spend money. It was very busy/hectic. The cenote was great. They tell you that lifejackets are mandatory, but there were many people in there without them. It is semi-covered, so not being able to wear sunscreen wasn't an issue. They have you shower before entering. There are vendor selling tequila/mezcal and honey products. The honey guy assured my friend that she could take the honey in a carry-on (~$30USD) but she ended up having to throw it away so don't believe that. It was a creamed chocolate honey, so maybe he was considering it a solid? Not sure, but you will waste your money if you don't check it. There is a shaman that does 'blessings' for tips. I'm not sure what herb they burn, but it's quite strong and smoky. If you're sensitive to smoke, try to avoid that. The problem was, they were also doing it down in the cenote. Just something to be aware of. There were some cool photo ops, so bring some cash for tips. Overall, that was a great stop. I really enjoyed the cenote. Maybe seeing Chichen Itza (I would have been happy just seeing it from a distance, but they wouldn't let us in at all!) would have made this tour completely worth it but what we spent vs. what we got out of the day was definitely disappointing. Without extra and minus the refund, we still spend around $120 to get dropped off to visit some vendors, try a few sips of tequila, eat lunch (drinks extra, even soda/water) and swim in a cenote. We could have done this around Cancun with the rental car. :( We really liked our guide. He was very thorough in his explanations. The driver was still in training, and honestly gave us quite a few scares. He would drift into the oncoming traffic lane, slam on his breaks before topes, etc. There are seatbelts though, so use those! The van we were in was very nice and they were timely for pickup. I would probably still recommend this to a friend even though we didn't get to the main event... it was just an unfortunate set of circumstances for us. A larger refund would have been nice.
