Highly recommended and great value - We booked this half-day walking tour of the medina to make the most of our limited time in Tunis. It was money well-spent. The rendezvous was Royal Victoria Hotel by the main medina gate and fountain, and although we weren’t guests there, the concierge was helpful. Our tour guide Maher was truly excellent. He has many years of experience, speaks multiple languages, and knows the streets and best spots to visit. He has superb local connections, chatting with friends along the route, and gaining access to hidden spaces dotted throughout the area, including: inside the cathedral; local produce market; repurposed palaces with decorations, tiles and stucco on every surface; peaceful courtyards; quiet residential side-streets; and a roof terrace with a panoramic view. (Note: tourists do not go inside the mosque.) The most unexpectedly moving stop was the vaulted centre of the gold jewellery district, which was formerly the centre of the Tunisian slave trade. We would not have seen so many intimate and interesting places, nor navigated the winding medieval market streets so well, without Maher’s guidance. The food-tasting side was a lower priority for us and Maher adapted the walk to suit our preferences: vegetarian, savoury food rather than sweets; and drinks. (Make sure to write your dietary needs when booking.) Drinking mint tea from a silver teapot in a restaurant busy with Tunisian families was a highlight of our trip. Highly recommended and great value. Perfect for couples and small groups of adults.

Too much time walking in the bazaars. - To begin with we met up with 4 others from our ship in the party lot and found the guy who was checking off our names. We stood there for 45 minutes while he was getting the other groups in vans but there was not o r for us He was trying to to negotiate a price to take us into town( which should have been included). When that failed we walked around to where the taxis were and he was trying to get then to take us in to town.It was a clown show. When we finally got there the guide met us and we started the tour. A cathedral and then maybe 1.5 miles walking through the bazaar/stalls.They all looked the same. It was very hard to stay together so he was way ahead of us and we basically heard nothing. The ground is uneven and hard to walk through is you have a bad knee or hip. We broke for lunch which is included. A beautiful spot but the food had no flavor. We asked that we not be taken back through the bazaars but there we went again. He did help us get a taxi back to the port though so that was very helpful.
