Turmi - Fly from Addis Ababa (ADD) to Jinka (BCO) and then drive to Turmi
Upon arrival at Jinka (Baco) airport, your driver and guide will greet you and embark on a 130 km (approximately 2-hour) journey to Turmi town to explore the Hamar tribe. On market days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), you might encounter the Aari, Banna, or Hamar tribal markets along the way. In the late afternoon, visit a secluded Hamar tribe village for an authentic cultural experience. You may also have the opportunity to witness tribal ceremonies such as the Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony (optional) or the Evangadi Dancing Ceremony (optional).

Demeka - Dimeka is an ideal village to engage with the Hamar people from the Omo Valley. Traveling between Turmi and Jinka on a Saturday is recommended, as it is the main market day.

The women’s adornments, including bracelets and pearl-encrusted leather, are remarkable, as is their skin, adorned with a red mud mask made from clay and butter and decorated with scars. Some women also wear large necklaces or collars to signify marriage. The market primarily focuses on cattle and common consumer goods such as vegetables and cereals, but you can also find various handicrafts.

While a local guide is not necessary, they can provide valuable insights. A guide can take you to the village of Bashada potters at Argude, which is nearby and offers authentic handicraft souvenirs.

Turmi-Karo-Jinka

Turmi - Drive from Turmi to Karo / Kara Tribe and then to Jinka
Embark on a 65 km (approximately 1-hour) drive to Karo Korcho village to meet the Kara people who live by the Omo River. Engage with the Karo people, renowned for their elaborate body and face paintings, and even have your face and/or body painted in the Kara style. Return to Turmi for lunch, and on market days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), you may visit a tribal market. You may also attend a tribal ceremony such as the Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony (optional) or the Evangadi Dancing Ceremony (optional). Finally, continue a 130 km (approximately 2-hour) drive to Jinka.

Jinka - For those eager to delve into local culture, a visit to the Ari Village is highly recommended. The Ari people, one of the indigenous tribes in Jinka, are known for their vibrant markets, traditional mud houses, and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can interact with the locals, learn about their customs, and purchase unique handicrafts as souvenirs.

Jinka-Mursi-Addis Ababa

Jinka - Journey from Jinka to the Mursi Tribe and fly to Addis Ababa
Travel 50 km one way to meet the Mursi people and return to Jinka. The Mursi are a nomadic tribe residing between the Mago and Omo National Parks. Mursi women are known for wearing lip plates on their lower lips. Finally, you will be taken to Jinka Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.

Mago National Park - Mago National Park is located in Ethiopia’s Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, approximately 782 kilometers south of Addis Ababa and north of a significant 90° bend in the Omo River. The park spans 2162 square kilometers and is divided by the Mago River, a tributary of the Omo, into two sections. To the west lies the Tama Wildlife Reserve, with the Tama River marking the boundary between the two. To the south is the Murle Controlled Hunting Area, characterized by Lake Dipa, which extends along the left side of the lower Omo. The park office is situated 115 kilometers north of Omorate and 26 kilometers southwest of Jinka. All roads to and from the park are unpaved.

Next, you’ll visit the Karo tribe, famous for their intricate body paintings and their picturesque settlement along the Omo River. The Mursi tribe will showcase their unique ear and lip loops, reflecting their cultural identity. Additionally, you will encounter the Banna, Tsemay, and Ari tribes, each offering fascinating insights into their traditions and harmonious relationship with the surrounding nature.
