Mehrangarh Fort - Visit Mehrangarh Fort, also known as Mehran Fort, built by Rao Jodha in 1459 in Jodhpur. It is one of the largest forts in India, situated atop a 410-foot hill and protected by massive walls. The fort’s entrance, atop a hill, is majestic, featuring seven gates: Victory Gate, Fateh Gate, Gopal Gate, Bhairon Gate, Dedh Kamgra Gate, Marti Gate, and Loha Gate. Each gate was built at different times for specific purposes, such as protection from cannonballs or animal attacks. Victory Gate commemorates Maharaja Man Singh’s victory over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. The fort also houses opulent palaces like Sheesh Mahal (Glass Palace) and Phool Mahal (Rose Palace).

Jaswant Thada - Visit Jaswant Thada, a splendid marble cenotaph monument and mausoleum for the kings of Marwar in Jodhpur. Built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, it is still used by the Marwar Royal Family as cremation grounds. The beautiful edifice, made of intricately carved marble, contrasts vibrantly with the red steps leading to the entrance. Jaswant Thada is an architectural landmark worth visiting. Local musicians and folk dancers entertain visitors on the steps leading to the monument. The cenotaph also features a beautifully maintained garden for tourists to explore. The intricately carved marble sheets are worth admiring, and the entire structure resembles a temple of unmatched beauty.

Mandore Garden - Known for its expansive green spaces, exquisite architecture, and royal cenotaphs, Mandore Garden in Jodhpur is a sight to behold. Located 9 kilometers from Jodhpur, Mandore was once the ruling seat of the Pratihara dynasty. The garden includes a Government Museum filled with artifacts and relics. The most striking feature is the gorgeous cenotaphs or ‘dewals’ spread throughout the garden, with the most beautiful belonging to Maharaja Ajit Singh. The structures, such as the Hall of Heroes with 16 warrior figures carved from a single rock, are the garden’s most striking features.

Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (By Road)

Jaisalmer - After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive to Jaisalmer, founded in 1156 by Bhatti Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal. Known as the Golden City, it rises from the Thar Desert like a golden mirage, with its commanding Fort dominating the amber-hued city. Due to its strategic location, it was an important ancient trading center, with camel caravans carrying precious spices and silk across the territory to India, Sindh, Arabia, and Europe. The 19th-century merchants built exquisitely carved Havelis (Mansions) from golden-yellow sandstone, which remain in beautiful condition. The fortified town evokes images of medieval majesty with its narrow lanes, magnificent palaces, havelis, temples, skilled artisans, and ubiquitous camels.

Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes

Jaisalmer Fort - Nestled on the golden sands of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer Fort is a mini-town with houses, temples, shops, and restaurants. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is part of the ‘Hill Forts of India’. Built in 1156, it is named after Bhati Rajput ruler Rao Jaisal. Over three thousand people reside within the fort walls, with multiple entrance gates leading to the popular public square, Dashera Chowk. The fort stands 250 ft. tall, surrounded by 30 ft. walls, offering stunning panoramic views of Jaisalmer city in golden yellow. As one of the world’s largest forts, it is located on the city’s southern edge and is known as ‘Sonar Qila’ or ‘Golden Fort’.

Jain Temples - Located within Jaisalmer Fort, the Jain Temples are a must-visit for their religious significance and ancient knowledge. Built in the renowned Dilwara style, these temples are dedicated to Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdev Ji, famous Jain hermits known as ‘Tirthankaras’. As a significant pilgrimage spot, the Jain Temples are a treasure of Jaisalmer city, attracting tourists interested in history and religion. All seven temples are interconnected and constructed using the same golden-yellow Jaisalmeri stone.

Kothari’s Patwon Ki Haveli - Jaisalmer is renowned for its rich heritage and culture, with havelis playing a major role. The Patwon-ki-Haveli, located about 10 km from Jaisalmer Fort, is famous for being the first haveli built in Jaisalmer and for being a cluster of five structures. The wall paintings and mirror work are major attractions. The haveli is currently used by the government for various purposes. Other notable havelis include Salim Ji ki haveli, known for its unique peacock-based architecture, and Nathmal Ji ki Haveli, which showcases continuity in design.

Sam Sand Dunes - In the evening, head to Sam Sand Dunes, an offbeat natural tourist destination in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert. Amidst historical forts and colorful markets, the sand dunes are among the country’s most authentic, with some reaching 30-60 meters in height. Located 40-42 kilometers from Jaisalmer, the dunes stretch for about 2 kilometers along the Jaisalmer Desert National Park’s borders. Travelers visit to witness dramatic sunrises and sunsets and experience Rajasthan’s culture and traditions through dances and musicals around campfires at night.
