The “Hegewald” headquarters, once led by SS Heinrich Himmler, is the only well-preserved Nazi headquarters in Ukraine, though access is somewhat restricted. Part of the bunker is currently used by an active military unit, but another entrance is open to visitors. In late summer 1942, a significant assembly of SS leaders convened here to discuss and approve the “Ost” plan for the colonization of occupied territories.
• Hulivtsi - The second Nazi bunker, Goering’s “Steinbruch,” lies in ruins within an inaccessible forest near the village of Hulivtsi. It was demolished by retreating Nazi troops in 1944. Although exploring this Luftwaffe headquarters is not possible, a guide will share important historical insights.
• Werwolf (Hitler’s Military Headquarters) - The day’s final stop is Hitler’s primary residence in Ukraine, the “Werwolf” headquarters, located near Strizhavka village, 75 miles from “Hegewald.” It was largely destroyed by retreating German forces in March 1944, but an intriguing museum with numerous informative displays remains. Visitors can view the remnants of the swimming pool and the mass grave of prisoners of war who constructed this enigmatic bunker.
