• Explore one of the rare rocky mountains in the Gobi, Baga Gazriin Chuluu, where stunning granite rock formations have been sculpted into various shapes by the wind and other powerful elements of the Gobi. In the mid-18th century, some esteemed and locally revered Buddhist monks resided in the area. Evidence of their presence can be seen in the temple ruins and inscriptions on the rocks. According to some historical accounts, Chinggis Khaan also lived here. It’s an excellent spot for an enjoyable hike.

• Today, we gradually transition from South to West, entering the territory of the Middle Gobi province. Our destination for the day is the Ongi Monastery ruins. Around 200 years ago, a vast complex of Buddhist temples was constructed on the banks of the Ongi River. At its height, it housed over 1000 lamas and included a religious institute, astrology center, and traditional medicinal school. Unfortunately, like many other monasteries, it suffered significant damage during the communist era. In the mid-2000s, a local initiative, supported by private funding, restored a temple where special ceremonies are now held.
• Take a brief tour around the ruins. Visit the small temple and a ger museum where belongings and possessions of lamas found in the ruins are displayed.

• After breakfast, begin the excursion around the monastery and attend a morning chanting ceremony.
• Set off towards Uran Togoo, an extinct volcanic crater located in Bulgan province on the way to Khuvsgul Lake. Uran, meaning artistic, is a crater that appears as if its ridges have been finely crafted. The circular crater ridge has a diameter of approximately 500 meters with a depth of 15 meters, surrounded by trees that enhance the scenery.

• Pass by Khutag Undur, a small county, and visit the remains of the ancient Uigur capital Baibalik, which existed during the 9th century AD.

Amarbayasgalant Monastery

Orkhon Province - • Continue the journey to one of the largest and best-preserved Buddhist Monasteries, Amarbayasgalant, which means a place of “Tranquil Felicity.” This pilgrimage site was constructed between 1727-1736 by order of the Manchurian King as a tribute to the Mongolian religious leader Zanabazar. The complex comprises 30 temples. During the communist purges, the monastery survived due to its significant contribution to Mongolian architectural art and invaluable cultural heritage.
