Terelj started catering to tourists in 1964 and three decades later, it was incorporated into the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The park extends to the north-east, merging with the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, which encompasses more than 1.2 million hectares across the Tov, Selenge and Khentii aimags. Khan Khentii park is mostly devoid of human existence but plays host to several threatened species such as the moose, the brown bear and the weasel among others. Additionally, it is a habitat for over 250 bird species.
