Kharkhorin (ancient Mongolian capital)
Erdene Zuu Monastery - Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of Mongolia, and the Erdene Zuu Monastery with its 108 stupas are compelling attractions situated 370 km from Ulaanbaatar at an elevation of 1600 meters above sea level. Established in 1220 by Genghis Khan in the Orkhon Valley, Kharkhorin served as the Mongolian capital for 40 years before being relocated to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Abandoned and later destroyed by Manchurian soldiers, the symbolic ruins of Kharkhorin, including monumental walls with 108 stupas, surround the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia built in 1586. Despite damage during the Stalinist purges, Erdene Zuu Monastery was revived after Mongolia’s democratic movement in 1990. Enclosed within massive walls, the three temples inside represent the three stages of Buddha’s life. The central temple, Zuu of Buddha, contains statues depicting Buddha as a child.
