Ulaanbaatar City - White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga)
Ulaanbaatar - As the capital and largest city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar seamlessly combines modern urban living with rich nomadic traditions. It is home to nearly half of Mongolia’s population and serves as the primary gateway for international visitors. The city offers a variety of attractions, including museums, monasteries, restaurants, and shopping centers.
For visitors, purchasing groceries in Ulaanbaatar is both simple and convenient. Supermarkets like Nomin, E-Mart, State Department Store, and Minii Delguur are well-stocked with a wide selection of local and imported goods, such as snacks, bottled water, fruits, ready-to-eat meals, and travel essentials. These stores are ideal for stocking up on supplies before venturing into rural or Gobi regions.
Mandalgovi - Mandal-Govi, the capital of Dundgovi Province in central Mongolia, is situated approximately 260 km south of Ulaanbaatar. Nestled in the semi-desert steppe of the Gobi region, it is renowned for its expansive landscapes, dramatic skies, and tranquil, authentic local atmosphere. Mandal-Govi is a crucial transport and supply hub for travelers heading further into the Gobi Desert, including destinations like Tsagaan Suvarga. The town provides basic amenities, local markets, and insight into daily life in Mongolia’s central Gobi.
Tsagaan Suvarga - Tsagaan Suvarga, meaning “White Stupa,” is a remarkable natural geological formation in Dundgovi Province of Mongolia’s Gobi region. Although its name references a Buddhist stupa (a sacred monument), the site is actually a natural cliff and escarpment, formed from ancient seabed deposits eroded over millions of years. Its layers of sedimentary clay and minerals have oxidized into vibrant bands of white, yellow, red, and other colors that shift with the lighting.
The cliffs can reach heights of up to ~60 m (197 ft) and stretch ~400 m (1,312 ft) across the flat Gobi plains.
From afar, the formations may resemble ruins or a white stupa, hence the name Tsagaan Suvarga.
