Genghis Khan Square - In the evening, embark on a brief city tour before dinner. Visit Sukhbaatar Square, the central hub of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by significant landmarks: the Government House and Parliament to the north, the State Opera and Ballet Theatre to the east, the Stock Exchange and City Hall to the west. At the center stands the statue of General Sukhbaatar, a hero of Mongolia’s 1921 independence.
Ulaanbaatar-Khognokhan Mountain
Khogo Khan Mountain Camp - Explore Gandan Monastery, Ulaanbaatar’s largest and most remarkable Buddhist monastery. The complex features various temples from different eras, with a highlight being the 26-meter-high gold-coated indoor Buddha, Megjidjanraiseg.
Embark on a 4-5 hour scenic drive west from Ulaanbaatar to Khogno Khan Mountain, a stunning and tranquil mountainous region in the heart of Mongolia’s grassland. Once a battleground for Buddhist sects, Khogno Khan is now a place of spirituality.
Discover a secluded Buddhist temple, hidden yet active and vibrant!
Spend the evening at the ger camp, relaxing under the Khogno Khan Mountains.
Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune - Spend the afternoon exploring the breathtaking landscape where red granite mountains rise above lush meadows and arid desert vistas. Discover a secluded Buddhist temple, hidden yet active and vibrant!
Then, visit Elsen Tasarkhai, an area of rolling dunes that appear out of place amidst the green steppe, known as the ‘mini Gobi.’ Here, visit a local herder family with hundreds of horses, sheep, goats, and cows.
Kharkhorin, Erdene-Zuu Monastery
Erdene Zuu Monastery - Take a day trip to Kharkhorin town, 90 km one way.
Kharkhorin was the former capital of the Mongolian Empire, founded in 1220 by Chingis Khan’s order. At its peak in the 13th century, it was from here that Chinggis Khan’s son, Ogedei Khan, ruled the largest land empire the world has ever known. During Kharkhorin’s golden age, much of the city consisted of tents.
Today, all that remains of this once-great settlement is the impressive Erdene Zuu Monastery and a few scattered archaeological finds.
Upon arrival in Kharkhorin, the first stop is the vast Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist center established in the 16th century, surrounded by 108 stupas, now an active monastery and museum.
After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Kharkhorin Museum.
Today, Kharkhorin is an ordinary small town.
Drive back to the camp at Khognokhan Mountain, 90 km.
Arrive at the camp, enjoy dinner, and rest.
Khognokhan Mountain-Ulaanbaatar-Terelj National Park
Genghis Khan Statue Complex - Return to Ulaanbaatar, 280 km and 58 km.
En route, have lunch at a restaurant in Ulaanbaatar.
Continue to the impressive Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex, a 40-meter tall monument built in 2006. Take the elevator and stairs to the horse’s head for a panoramic view.
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park - Drive 30 km to Terelj National Park, stop at Turtle Rock, a natural rock formation, and take a short hike to enjoy the scenery.
Arrive at a tourist camp and check in.
Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Terelj NP – South Gobi – Yolyn Am Gorge. Local flight
Yolyn Am – Khongor Sand Dunes. 200 km.
Khongor Dunes – Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs – Dalanzadgad. 250 km
Dalanzadgad – Ulaanbaatar. Local flight.
Genghis Khan Museum - Enjoy breakfast and transfer to the airport for the return flight to Ulaanbaatar.
Upon arrival, transfer to Ulaanbaatar.
Visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum, opened in 2023, showcasing Mongolia’s history, culture, and heritage. On the top floor, admire the seated golden statue of Chinggis Khaan, gilded with 107 kg of gold.
Lunch at a traditional Mongolian restaurant.
Check in at the hotel.
After lunch, visit Zaisan Hill Historical Memorial Complex and enjoy a panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar city.
The next stop is the State Department Store, known in Mongolia as ‘lh Delguur’ or ‘The Big Shop’ – an opportunity to pick up last-minute souvenirs and learn more about Ulaanbaatar’s history.
Attend a folklore Khoomii singing and dancing performance.
After dinner, rest at the hotel.
Zaisan Memorial - After lunch, visit Zaisan Hill Historical Memorial Complex and enjoy a panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar city.
The State Department Store - The next stop is the State Department Store, known in Mongolia as ‘lh Delguur’ or ‘The Big Shop’ – an opportunity to pick up last-minute souvenirs and learn more about Ulaanbaatar’s history.
