The statue faces east towards his birthplace. It stands atop the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor center that is 10 meters (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. Designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal, it was erected and opened in 2008 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Mongol Empire’s founding.

Unlike the nearby steppes, it features mountains and trees, including large stands of tamaracks that turn golden in the fall.
