The large monuments atop the hill were erected in memory of soldiers who died in World War II. /no ticket required/ - Genghis Khan Statue Complex - The Genghis Khan Statue Complex features a 40-meter (130 ft) tall stainless steel statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, recognized as the world’s tallest equestrian statue. It is located on the bank of the Tuul River at Tsonjin Boldog, 54 km (33.55 mi) east of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, where legend says he discovered a golden whip. The statue faces east towards his birthplace. It stands atop the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor center that is 10 meters (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. Designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal, it was erected and opened in 2008 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Mongol Empire’s founding.
- Gorkhi Terelj National Park - Gorkhi-Terelj is one of Mongolia’s national parks, located 55 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar city. Unlike the nearby steppes, it features mountains and trees, including large stands of tamaracks that turn golden in the fall. The park boasts a stunning alpine landscape, numerous rock formations for rock climbers, and includes a famous formation named Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) due to its resemblance to a turtle.
