Purchased by Winston Churchill in 1922, it served as his primary base during the 1920s and 1930s for writing, painting, and hosting guests. The property was a financial burden until a group of Churchill’s friends and admirers bought it for the Trust in 1946, allowing Churchill and his wife to reside there for life. Lady Churchill donated it to the Trust immediately after Churchill’s passing in 1965.
