- Culloden Battlefield - Our second destination is Culloden Moor, the site of the last significant battle on British soil. This historic moor is the final resting place for 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who perished in 1746. Visitors can walk along the battle lines, view the soldiers’ graves, and see the memorial cairn at the battlefield’s center. Flags mark the front lines of both armies, illustrating the battle’s vast scale, while clan markers denote the graves of the fallen. In our ongoing conservation efforts, we strive to restore the land to its 18th-century appearance. Collaborating with our Facilities team, goats and Shetland cows graze the land as they did in the past. The distinctive landscape of Culloden also supports diverse wildlife, including skylarks that live and breed on the battlefield, and garden tiger moth caterpillars.
- Clava Cairns - Our first stop is The Clava Cairns, or the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Balnuaran of Clava, remnants of a once expansive Bronze Age burial complex. This evocative cemetery site, dating back 4,000 years, retains original features such as passage graves, standing stones, and ring cairns (stone circles).
- Cawdor Castle - A romantic fairy-tale castle, Cawdor Castle has been the residence of the Thanes of Cawdor since 1370. It has transformed into a charming family mansion and one of the most remarkable stately homes. The castle features a dramatic medieval tower, dungeon, turrets, battlements, and more. Cawdor Castle, with its iron gate, moat, drawbridge, turrets, turnpike stairs, and vaulted 16th-century kitchen, is rich in intrigue and history.
This ancient medieval tower house, built for the 3rd Thane of Cawdor, has housed over 23 generations of the Cawdor family.
Explore 12 principal rooms of this unique home, which contain collections of rare tapestries, fine art, furniture, ceramics, and sculptures spanning 3,500 years.
