1. Chinchero
ARTISANAL MARKET OF CHINCHERO. Situated 28 km from Cusco on the paved road to Urubamba, this town features a stunning colonial temple built on Inca foundations. Its main highlight is the artisanal market, originally for bartering agricultural products between valley and mountain range residents. Today, it captivates tourists with its vibrant display of crafts and textiles in the authentic pre-Columbian style.
2. Moray
MORAY. Located 7 km from Maras, about an hour from Cusco via the Chinchero route, this site offers a spectacular view of circular terraces of varying sizes. These terraces were used for agricultural experimentation and are believed to be centers of female energy, making it a magnetic hub of Pachamama.
3. Salt Mine of Maras
MARAS SALT MINES. Found northwest of Maras, these “salt mines” consist of approximately 3000 small wells. Salt has been harvested here since pre-Hispanic times through a sun-drying process of saltwater from an underground stream. Once the water evaporates, the salt is ready for sale.
4. Urubamba
URUBAMBA. Known for its Inca maize production, this area is now a picturesque countryside with abundant fruit tree cultivation. It is an ideal spot to enjoy a traditional local buffet lunch.
5. Ollantaytambo Sanctuary
OLLANTAYTAMBO. This typical Inca village, 21 km from Urubamba (2800 meters above sea level), is named after the chieftain Ollanta, famous for his romance with an Inca princess, Pachacutec’s daughter. A well-preserved area extends north of Hanan Huacaypata Square, featuring 15 blocks of mansions on tilled stone walls. The vast archaeological site on the hill includes notable structures like the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana, and the Princess Baths.
6. Parque Arqueológico Pisac
PISAC. Located 33 km from Cusco via the paved road from the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Pisac boasts an ancient town, a significant archaeological site in Cusco, and a modern town of colonial origin. The renowned Pisac artisan market draws thousands of visitors.
