The shrine’s history began in the late 19th century with a young boy from Kitchener, Ontario. After his mother nearly died during childbirth, he vowed to undertake a significant work for the Church if she survived. She did, and the boy, who became Father Ambrose Mayer, fulfilled his promise. Designated a National Sanctuary in 1983, The Grotto has welcomed over ten million visitors. It continues to invite people from around the world, offering spiritual and natural tranquility, in honor of Mary, the Sorrowful Mother of Jesus. The Grotto adapts to meet the needs of a changing world, realizing Father Mayer’s dream and promise through the dedication of those who serve here.
