Then, take your basket, knife, and field guide and follow the guide on a leisurely, guided 1-hour walk through the forest. The guide has already scouted the area for currently fruiting mushrooms, ensuring the best opportunity to encounter fascinating seasonal varieties!
During the walk, gain insights into the ecosystems mushrooms thrive in, the trees and plants they associate with, and tips for locating them. The guide will identify edible, inedible, and toxic species, explaining how to distinguish them. While limited hands-on foraging may be possible if conditions permit, this introductory experience emphasizes building confidence through education.
Upon returning to the tables, participants will sort, clean, and bag the day’s discoveries together. Learn the five essential steps to mushroom identification, along with practical cooking and preservation tips. Depart with a personal bag of mushrooms and recipe ideas, ready to continue the foraging adventure.

Participants will learn to safely identify edible types from their toxic and inedible counterparts, understand the specific trees and ecosystems associated with various mushrooms, and know when they are in season—all while wandering through the lush green forests that Washington is renowned for.
Even if mushrooms make you uneasy, this class will dispel common myths and equip you with the confidence and skills to continue exploring independently long after the class concludes. Your future hikes will be transformed!
Participants are welcome to keep the mushrooms they find during the class. We ensure that no one leaves empty-handed, so if wild finds are scarce, each participant will receive a bag of fresh gourmet mushrooms to take home, along with recipe suggestions.
