Sam is The Go-To-Guy for adventuring around and in Wayne County - I wouldn't want to do this tour with anyone else, much less alone. Sam clearly has a deep knowledge of this environment, remote off-roads, Utah's history, and geology in general. Sam read my interests (rocks, history, plants) and adjusted his speed and communication style with humor and generosity. Throughout the drive and at each stop he shared details on rocks and minerals, how formations occurred over millions of years, where outlaws of the Old West hid out, and indigenous peoples, plants, and wildlife. He also asked questions and listened carefully. The time flew by and I was constantly catching my breath at the different landscapes and colors. We saw more than I could've imagined--parts of Capitol Reef, the Temple of the Sun (Moon and Stars), Moonscape Overlook, San Rafael Swell, Glass Mountain, Bentonite Hills, desert trumpets, fossilized clamshells, dinosaur bones embedded in rock walls! We even saw a western whiptail lizard. Only thing missing was Sasquatch.

A True Highlight of Our 5-Week Southwest Trip - If you're looking for a truly memorable experience in the Southwest, I can highly recommend West Whiptail Adventures. Our guide, Sam, was warm, knowledgeable, and made everyone feel completely at ease. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does – it came through in every moment and made the tour feel thoughtful and personal. We spent the whole day (~ 6 hrs) exploring with him in the Capitol Reef area, and the time just flew by. I was often struck by the beauty and variety of the landscapes – from the vividly colored Bentonite Hills to the stark, moonscape-like terrain at Moonscape Overlook – both memorable stops along the way. One moment I won’t forget: just as we passed behind Factory Butte, a distant thunderstorm rolled in. The light, the silence, and the scale of the scene made it feel almost surreal. Thank you, Sam, for creating such a meaningful day. We would book this tour again in a heartbeat – it was truly one of the most special experiences of our entire trip.

This was a first class way to see the park. - The views were incredible. We saw places few see. Sam was a fine host with a serious love for Capitol Reef. He was easy to work with in scheduling the trip. A knowledgeable tour guide.

An out of the world experience with a Utah local! - One of the peak Utah experiences (figuratively & sometimes literally) especially in a relatively-unexplored Capitol Reef area, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Sam is a very knowledgeable & passionate guide and a skilled driver whose love for Utah shows in all the information and stories he shares with you. I had the fortune of going to Capitol reef right after a snowfall which caused the insanely colorful Bentonite hills (or so I've heard) to turn into a bunch of underwhelming white domes (what I saw), and Sam immediately threw in a free trip to the Moonscape view and Factory Butte to not spoil the tour, along with some of his personal favorite spots taking multiple detours from the loop on my itinerary. This, in addition to the usual awe-inspiring sites in the area, made the tour one of the most spontaneous & memorable adventures I've had in Utah. So, please do yourself a favor and sign up for one of the Western Whiptail tours and you'll certainly find it a great way to truly enjoy the Capitol Reef NP and make a good friend in Torrey, without the risk of getting your own rental car stuck in the desert clay and becoming a part of the Reef's topography.

Wonderful Time! - I wanted to take a moment to share how much we enjoyed our recent private tour. My wife arranged the experience, and everything from start to finish exceeded our expectations. Our guide, Sam, was absolutely fantastic. He picked us up directly from our Airbnb, which made everything so convenient, and from the moment we met, he made us feel comfortable and well taken care of. His knowledge, friendliness, and attention to detail truly made the tour memorable. And the stories were very interesting! We’re very grateful for the thoughtful planning and excellent service. We would be happy to recommend this tour to others and would love to know if there’s a place we can leave a review to share our experience. Thank you again for a wonderful time!
