Setting Sail to Caño Island

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself standing on the sandy shores of Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, ready to embark on a snorkeling adventure to Caño Island. As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the promise of exploring the vibrant marine life and coral reefs of this renowned Marine Biological Reserve had me buzzing with excitement.

Our journey began with a short hike to the beach, where we boarded the tour boat. The crew, led by our captain Keilor, was already hard at work ensuring everything was in place for a smooth ride. The waters were a bit choppy, but Keilor’s expertise and calm demeanor made the journey feel like a breeze. As we cruised past the famous Whale’s Tail and into the open waters of Bahia Ballena, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation building.

The boat ride was a spectacle in itself, with the possibility of spotting dolphins and whales adding an extra layer of thrill. Though we didn’t catch a glimpse of any whales, the sight of dolphins playfully leaping alongside our boat was a delightful prelude to the underwater wonders that awaited us.

Diving into the Deep Blue

Arriving at Caño Island, I was immediately struck by the clarity of the water and the vibrant colors of the coral beds below. Our guide, Jordy, was a local expert with an infectious enthusiasm for the marine life that called this place home. With his guidance, we slipped into the water for our first snorkeling session.

The underwater world was nothing short of magical. Schools of multicolored fish darted around us, while majestic manta rays glided gracefully through the water. Jordy led us to the best spots, where we encountered white-tip reef sharks, curious turtles, and even the elusive moray eels peeking out from their rocky hideouts. It was a veritable parade of marine life, each creature more fascinating than the last.

Between snorkeling sessions, we took a break on the boat, sharing stories and marveling at the beauty of the ocean. The camaraderie among the group was palpable, and it was clear that everyone was as captivated by the experience as I was.

A Taste of Costa Rica

After our underwater adventures, we made our way to Piñuelas Beach for a well-deserved lunch. Roylan, our marinero, had prepared a delicious spread of traditional Costa Rican fare, complete with fresh fruit and refreshing drinks. As we dined on the sandy shores, the sound of the waves provided the perfect soundtrack to our meal.

The afternoon was spent leisurely exploring the beach and soaking up the sun. The natural beauty of the area was a reminder of why I fell in love with this part of the world in the first place. As we made our way back to the mainland, cruising past the scenic Costa Ballena, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures.
