Colchani - Colchani is home to 580 residents whose livelihoods are tied to salt extraction, agriculture (real quinoa), crafts, and tourism. It is a must-stop on the way to the magnificent Uyuni salt flat. A unique feature of the area is the small houses constructed from salt bricks. Besides the salt factory, the craft stalls on the main street are a notable attraction.
Activities:
- Purchase handicrafts at the central point of Colchani.
- Visit the salt processor and the Salt Museum in Colchani.
- View the first Salt Hotel “Playa Blanca,” now the main salt museum in the area.
Uyuni Salt Flat - The next stop is the captivating Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the world, covering over 10,000 square kilometers and situated at 3,653 meters above sea level in the Bolivian altiplano. At the southeast end of the Salar de Uyuni, you will see the salt mounds formed from saline extraction. This process involves marking the area, manually shredding the salt, and then drying it in small pyramid shapes under the sun.
Isla Incahuasi - The guide will accompany you to Incahuasi Island, known for its high-altitude location and soil composed of fossils of algae, mollusks, and other organisms called stromatolites. Cactaceous plants thrive here. It is centrally located, 74 km from Colchani, with a steep surface of 24 hectares and the highest point 40 meters above the salt level.
Uyuni Salt Flat - Your visit will be guided by the following cultural heritage of the Salar de Uyuni:
- Salt Stairway: Designed for taking photographs with special optical effects. A stunning saline ensemble showcasing authentic beauty.
- Dakar Rally Monument and the endless forest of flags: Observe flags from around the world, with Bolivia as the central symbol, representing the heart of Latin America.
- Salt Pyramid: From here, view the mountains outlined on the horizon, minimized by distance and the majesty of the infinite salt plateau.
- Polygons and Ojos de Sal: In the upper crust of the Salar, you will see the so-called ojos de brine, small holes formed by fine, sharp crystals like needles, accompanied by polygonal figures in the vast whiteness of the Salar.
Camino al Volcán Tunupa - The tour continues to the Thunupa Volcano and its surroundings, with sightings of Andean Flamingos and panoramic views of the Salar de Uyuni. Learn about the history and myths of this mysterious tourist attraction, where, according to local lore, mountains once walked, talked, and had human forms.
Enjoy a special toast in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni with sandwiches and hot drinks while witnessing a breathtaking sunset, naturally painted with surreal colors and landscapes. Undoubtedly, a special and unforgettable experience.
From Tahua to Ojo de Perdiz
Laguna Hedionda - The stinking lagoon is a salty lake near the Salar de Uyuni, famous for its migratory pink and white flamingos. This lake has a high saline content of 80% and an average depth of just under a foot.
Laguna Canapa - This lagoon exhibits a yellow color effect in its waters. Access is by vehicle, and you can see various waterfowl species, such as Andean ducks and huallatas.
Salar de Chiguana - Cross the Salar de Chiguana, another salt formation bordering Chile, surrounded by volcanoes in shades of gray, silver, red, and white. The site features a railway from Abaroa Station to Uyuni.
From Ojo de Perdiz to Uyuni Bolivia
Árbol de Piedra - An isolated volcanic rock formation in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, eroded by wind-blown sand, symbolizes the Siloli desert and serves as the entrance to the REA. This natural monument resembles a stunted tree about 7 meters high. Winter temperatures average between -20°C and -25°C.
Desierto Dali - The sandy desert’s rocks and colorful surrounding mountains create a surreal landscape reminiscent of Salvador Dali’s paintings, earning it the nickname “Dalí’s desert.” Surreal volcanic rocks in various shades and shapes surround you.
Laguna Verde - Laguna Verde is known for its emerald green color, resulting from the high copper and arsenic content in the area’s geological formations. On the shores of this impressive lagoon, enormous black volcanic stones and other rocks emerge from the earth’s interior.
Laguna Colorada - The colors of Laguna Colorada are striking, with water tinted by red algae and other microorganisms, creating a deep orange-red hue. In contrast, the salty lagoon is dotted with large white pools from borax deposits on the surface. Combined with rolling mountains and rugged rocky coastlines, Laguna Colorada is a pristine and beautiful wildlife area. Declared the first RAMSAR site in Bolivia in June 1990, it is one of the most important wetlands in the region, the country, and the world, home to diverse fauna, including a rare breed of flamingos that have flocked to the area for centuries.
