St. Joseph Plantation stands as one of the few completely preserved sugar plantations in the River Parishes. Alongside the Manor Home, this historic location offers numerous outbuildings for visitors to explore. These include the original homes of enslaved individuals, a separate kitchen, a blacksmith’s shop, a schoolhouse, and a chicken coop. While several buildings have been relocated from other areas of the property, the majority remain in their original locations.
The initial construction of the St. Joseph House began in the 1830s and was expanded in the 1850s. This expansion was financed by dowry money given to Josephine Aime Ferry by her father, Francois Gabriel “Valcour” Aime. In 1877, Joseph Waguespack acquired the plantation and named it in honor of his patron saint. Later, one of his grandsons purchased Felicity Plantation. In 1901, his grandchildren established the St. Joseph Planting and Manufacturing Co., LTD., merging the two plantations.
