Valladolid - Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo, “El Nephew,” this city was once inhabited by the Cupules at a location known as Chauac Há, part of a Mayan chiefdom. During the Caste War, over twenty families relocated from Valladolid to Cozumel, repopulating the area we recognize today.
Valladolid is the second-largest city in Yucatan and the oldest in the state. At the Zací Regional Handicraft Center, visitors can find a variety of crafts to take home, including embroidered huipiles, guayaberas, basketry, jewelry, and saddlery.
For a culinary treat, local restaurants offer Yucatecan specialties such as venison pipián, salbutes, panuchos, papadzules, stuffed cheese, cochinita pibil, chicken stew, and beans with pork. These dishes have earned Yucatecan cuisine a top spot among the best. After your meal, try the xtabentun.
Valladolid was designated a Magical Town in 2012.
