Explore the fundamentals of basic astronomy, delve into the history of Polynesian voyaging and settlement, and discover navigational techniques along with the archeo-astronomy of Rapa Nui. Visit some of the island’s traditional observatory sites to admire the night sky and observe stars and constellations unique to the Southern Hemisphere.
The guide will highlight stars and constellations significant to Polynesian navigators, sharing stories and legends associated with them, and will demonstrate how to locate certain cardinal points of the traditional Polynesian compass using the night sky’s arrangement. Marvel at the beauty of star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, stars, and planets through a high-powered telescope before heading to Anakena Beach for photographs.
