Nanaimo Museum - The Nanaimo Museum offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the area’s history, from the Snunéymuxw culture to the Bastion Era, coal mining history, and more. The museum also hosts special exhibits from museums nationwide. Established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, the museum relocated in 2008 to a new facility within the Vancouver Island Conference Center in downtown Nanaimo. It features a charming gift shop and is connected to “Serious Coffee,” a café on the Nanaimo Bar Trail.

Harbourfront Walkway - Nanaimo’s Harbourfront Walkway is a highlight of the city’s beauty. Stretching along the waterfront below Front Street, the walkway is elevated above the shore and ocean in some sections, while in others, it winds through parks and green spaces. Along the Harbourfront Walkway, visitors will find tourist shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, docks, boats, and the seaplane base. Whale watching tours depart from here, and seaplanes offer flights to various destinations, including Vancouver, or 40-minute Seaplane Tours over the Strait of Georgia, showcasing views of the Sunshine Coast. For a delightful meal, visit the Lighthouse Bistro on the walkway, overlooking the harbor, located in the same building as the seaplane passenger waiting lounge.

Neck Point Park - This picturesque park is a favorite spot for walking, picnicking, swimming, and scuba diving. Visitors may also spot orcas, sea lions, and other marine life from the park’s lookouts. A scenic walking trail, just under two kilometers, follows the shoreline of this small peninsula, passing beaches and through arbutus trees, Garry oaks, and Douglas fir. Sunset Beach, Last Beach, Indian Beach, and Finn Beach are nestled in the coves between the headlands, offering swimming opportunities on all sides of the park. At the far end, between Indian Beach and Last Beach, a lookout point on a high rock provides stunning views. In front of the lookout is a tidal zone, which at low tide reveals a gravel sandbar leading to a small rock island, known as the “neck” the park is named after. This is a popular dive site, with divers entering from the neck or Finn Beach, near the parking lot.
-
Pipers Lagoon Park - Located just north of downtown Nanaimo, Pipers Lagoon Park extends into the ocean, creating a fascinating tidal flat on the inland side and offering views over the Salish Sea from the outer side. Walking trails circle the small peninsula, featuring high points with cliff views and lower areas for accessing the water’s edge. The park is a favorite among locals for walking or relaxing. If staying in the city center, it’s a lovely spot for a nature walk.
