Sarnath - Sarnath: Located in Varanasi, Sarnath is where Buddha chose to deliver his first sermon, making it one of the most revered Buddhist sites.
Sarnath is home to many Buddhist monuments and structures. Notable Buddhist monuments include the Dhamekha Stupa, the Dharmarajika Stupa, the Chaukhandi Stupa, and various monasteries and temples representing different schools of Buddhism from Japan, China, Thailand, Burma, and others. The Indian Buddhist society, known as the Mahabodhi Society, maintains a park around the Buddha temple. The Mahabodhi Temple within the park houses a tooth relic of the Buddha.
Sarnath also features a vast area of ancient ruins. Several Buddhist structures were constructed at Sarnath between the 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD, and today it showcases the most valuable ruins along the Buddhist trail. The Lion Capital of Ashoka pillar at Sarnath is India’s National emblem, displayed in the archaeological museum in Sarnath.
