• Cimitero Ebraico - Now a serene garden, this was Venice’s primary Jewish cemetery from 1386 to the 18th century. From the gate, view the ancient tombs, showcasing designs from Venetian Gothic to Ottoman styles.
• Chiesa di San Nicolo al Lido - This is the site of the traditional thanksgiving mass of the Sposalizio del Mare (“Marriage of the Sea”), a ceremony symbolizing Venice’s maritime dominance.
• Faro di San Nicolò - After cycling through a protected natural area, continue along an old pier between the sea and the harbor mouth to the lighthouse. It’s a perfect spot to admire the Lido coastline and the silhouettes of the Grand Hotel des Bains and Hotel Excelsior.
• Hotel des Bains - Once a luxury hotel built in 1900 to attract affluent tourists, it is famous for Thomas Mann’s stay in 1911 and films like “Death in Venice” (1971) and “The English Patient” (1996).
• Ristorante Mostra Del Cinema - The world’s oldest festival occurs here in late August or early September, with screenings at the historic Palazzo del Cinema. The Art Nouveau Hotel Excelsior (1908) often hosts producers and actors during the festival.
• Murazzi Free beach - The journey will be adventurous as you bike along the Murazzi, a picturesque route by the Adriatic Sea. Murazzi is an impressive 18th-century engineering feat, designed to protect the lagoon from high seas, still effective today.
• L’Oasi delle Dune Alberoni - Alberoni’s natural beach features a maritime pine forest leading to Lido’s most scenic and wild beach. These captivating dunes inspired Shelley’s poems and Byron’s early morning rides. The beach is often deserted, except for marine birds and a few kite surfers or windsurfers on windy days.
• Malamocco - From the beach, enter this quaint fishing village by crossing Ponte di Borgo and explore the canals and calli of a less bustling lagoon town with a few churches and a Gothic palazzo, a miniature version of Venice!
• Poveglia - The route continues on the lagoon side of the island, offering views of Lazzaretto Vecchio. From 1776, the island served as a quarantine station for plague and other diseases, later becoming a mental hospital, closed in 1968. It is often featured on paranormal shows.
• Lazzaretto Vecchio - The route continues on the lagoon side of the island, with views of Lazzaretto Vecchio. Between 1403 and 1630, it housed a hospital for plague epidemics and a leprosarium. Later, it served as a military post, like other islands.
• San Lazzaro degli Armeni - The route continues on the lagoon side of the island, with views of San Lazzaro degli Armeni. This small island in the Venetian Lagoon has been home to the Mekhitarists’ monastery, an Armenian Catholic congregation, since 1717.

Embarking on a bicycling adventure, we’ll journey through Lido island with its polished shell-encrusted beaches, sun-kissed lifeguards, and aged women enjoying Prosecco at the local market. Bask in the grandeur of the Belle Epoque era as we pass splendidly designed hotels, iconic of the 1920s Art Nouveau style.
As we pedal along the lagoon, exceptional views of Venice will unfold, with a stop at an old Jewish cemetery. We’ll make our way to the San Nicolò harbor mouth, cycling up to its lighthouse, and finishing our route at the renowned Hotel Excelsior - a hub during Venice’s star-studded Movie Festival.
We’ll pedal next to the Malamocco’s canals, a vibrant fishing village that’s a scaled-down rendition of Venice, as we traverse through a forest reserve to a lighthouse. Immerse in local lifestyle at the serene Alberoni beach, with a swim or a drink.
Our journey will progress on the lagoon side of the island, affording vistas of the deserted Poveglia island, Lazzaretto Vecchio Island and San Lazzaro degli Armeni Island.
